Baby Boy's Name - help me make sense of it!

I absolutely love the name Woody, but worry that as DS (I'm 17 weeks pregnant) grows up, he may need something more 'serious' to fall back on - I'd like to name him Edward (Woody) Ernest Murphy. My DH points out that he might be called Eddie Murphy. I actually like Eddie, but worry that he might have the piss taken out of him a bit. I figure if I push for the nn Woody, we might get away with it? Any thoughts? Hormones may be getting in the way of a clear decision here :-)

I wouldn't worry about it - great name and the chances of him being Eddie arent tha high if you call him Woody.

My dh has the same name as a famous singer, as does my ds2 (not deliberately) and it doesn't do them any harm.

Woody will be the Toy Story cowboy to this generation for quite some time I would say. To the rest of us it is an erection!

seeker Mon 06-Feb-12 15:27:22

Woody is a hard on to me.

PopcornBiscuit Mon 06-Feb-12 15:32:27

I think Eddie is quite likely, and someone's bound to make "Eddie Murphy" connection.Edward is pronounced Ed-wuhd, not Ed-wood, so not keen on Woody as nickname I'm afraid. And there's that problem Seeker describes so succinctly...!

Ernest is a great name though - could you use this as first name? smile

NatashaBee Mon 06-Feb-12 15:34:54

You cannot name your son after an erection, sorry. The Toy Story association is secondary to the ruder connotations that 'Woody' has!

hankins Mon 06-Feb-12 15:37:34

I hadn't even thought of the erection connection smile. I don't hear it that often so could we get away with it?

I know it is a bit of a tenuous link between Edward and Woody, but I really don't like Woodrow, which is a shame.

I do love Ernest, but not as much as Woody. I think my DH is humoring me on the Woody front, hoping that our DS will just be called Ed, or Eddie, and that by then, no-one will remember that comedian fella that got Scary Spice updiffed!

hankins Mon 06-Feb-12 15:38:56

I may be starting to change my mind now! I thought if it was good enough for Fat Boy Slim and Zoe Ball, it was good enough for me smile

seeker Mon 06-Feb-12 15:41:22

Sorry- I don't think Eddie Murphy'a a goer either. And you honestly can't give a chid- particularly a boy child- a name that has an even remote sexual nuance. Ask your dp to think back to being 12....

Back to the drawing board, I'm afraid.

kamklo122 Mon 06-Feb-12 15:48:11

well you can go with woody and when he's ready to be called something else, he can decide. i have two cousins who did that... drives me nuts and i still call them by their nickname..but family'll do that to ya.

hankins Mon 06-Feb-12 17:28:26

Ok, I take your point. Although I love it, it may be a step too far. The only other name I have up my sleeve is Wilfred. What do you think to Wilfred Ernest Murphy. Potentially nn Freddy?

justhayley Mon 06-Feb-12 23:04:37

My best friends sister just named her baby woody - I thought of toy story first my DP though erection - we giggle everytime we talk about him

PopcornBiscuit Mon 06-Feb-12 23:05:22

Wilfred Ernest Murphy (nn Freddy) is really nice smile

PopcornBiscuit Mon 06-Feb-12 23:06:01

(do you think Freddy Murphy is too much like Eddie Murphy though?? confused)

snice Mon 06-Feb-12 23:08:27

its more of an amalgam of Eddie Murphy and Fredddie Mercury grin

snice Mon 06-Feb-12 23:08:55

but with less 'd' s

PopcornBiscuit Mon 06-Feb-12 23:09:02

Wilbur, Will for short?

mummybare Mon 06-Feb-12 23:36:45

So it's Woody or Willy? Or Eddie or Freddy Murphy? hmm

Actually, I really like Woody and it didn't make me think of erections before everyone started mentioning them, so if you love it, go with it, I say!

HolyNoSheDittantBatman Tue 07-Feb-12 00:08:56

Woody isn't a term I've ever heard/used as a term for an erection. It does summon images of Toy Story, but I think that's OK, Woody is a pretty cool character IMO.

I think Edward is a good choice. Don't call him Eddie and you can avoid Eddie Murphy references. Call him Woody when he's little and if when he's older if he doesn't like it he can choose from one of the other nicknames.

jollster Tue 07-Feb-12 08:39:09

never heard of Woody as a term for erection...
think Woody perfectly acceptable NN for Edward...

hankins Tue 07-Feb-12 09:07:33

Thanks everyone. We have time to properly decide, but we do seem to be veering towards Wlfred/Fred as a name. It's so difficult- with DS1 we just found a name we loved and stuck to it from very early on. I haven't felt as strongly about any other boy's name. I just wish one jumped out at me and I was certain. My DH loves Edward, but doesn't want to burden the kid with a name he might be laughed at about.

Arwhen Tue 07-Feb-12 12:15:34

TBH I wouldn't worry about Eddie Murphy too much. He's already past his prime so in 10-20 years time he won't be all that relevant.

telsa Tue 07-Feb-12 13:02:07

I knew a Hereward once - that could become Woody too. Or Elwood, or Haywood (bit like Wayward!)

birdofthenorth Thu 09-Feb-12 13:54:25

Elwood! nn Woody, of course

FaithHopeAndKevin Thu 09-Feb-12 14:11:26

its more of an amalgam of Eddie Murphy and Fredddie Mercury <snigger>

Seriously? Call him Wilfred, if you want to use Woody as a nickname, then do.
