Have you just sat there with the spreadsheet and put together all the differently spelled versions of the names ?

How do you decide what constitutes an alternative spelling though?

Am asking as I am genuinely interested.

DS2's name is Siôn, which rarely appears in name lists, but alternative spellings (eg Sean, Shaun etc) are more common.

You can check for yourself. They may have only used the Mohammeds in the top 100. There are loads more throughout the whole list.

According to The Metro, Mohhammed has 19 different spellings. If you add up all the different spellings, it's No 1.

Thats a point- there seem to be a lot of (i presume) polish spellings of names , like Wictoria etc in the list. I don't know if you add those together. The Metro is the bedfellow of the Daily Mail, so I suppose being that Mohammed is such an exclusively Muslim name would mean it makes a better headline than "the most common name in the UK is Paul!"

For example would you incluse Seamus and Iago in with James?

And actually, looking at it, I would add Isabelle and Isabella together, making that the most polular. I wanted Isabella, but my SIL has called my niece Isabelle. I wouldn't use it because I regard them as the same name essentially.

I'd actually put money on the most popular name, if you counted up all the spellings and versions (Siôn, Sean, Ioan, Shaun, Evan, Hans, Ewan, Jack, Jan, Ivan, Johan, Jean, Gianni etc etc) is actually John

Another MNer did the girls but she said that she followed the same principles as I, which were not to include the hyphenated names nor the short or long forms of names (Bens were not added to Benjamins).
