Why do people keep saying this to me? It is most annoying.

Just say, "No it fucking isn't, it is fucking awful". Then they probably won't talk to you again. Shorthand version is "Oh fuck off". Problem solved.

I am beginning to wonder if it is just some sort of basic attempt at social interaction by people who do not know me.

YABU! It has been nice when compared with a couple of weeks or so ago.

And as shown on athread the other day - you can't start a conversation with another parent about their child's appearance or abilities, or about your own appearance/ability - so options are a bit limiting!

YABU they are being friendly.

sorry, I am being ironic. As you say, hula, it seems that many many people have lost all understanding of making a little friensly conversation with a stranger.

hem hem, franca. We have had some sun. You need to practise your small-talk skills.

Isn't the weather lovely today? For the time of year I mean. I wore a coat today and you know, I really didn't need it.

Do you think this is why I was so unpopular in the UK?

Report

I thought you were in the uk?

Bastards.

I used to know a woman whose small talk was always laced with hostility. She used to say 'hot enough for you is it?' and 'it's still raining I see!' and 'well, are you going on holiday or NOT?' and fold her arms and glare at me. She worked in a bakery, I don't know if this was relevant.

I used to quite like it, was quite demanding for small talk.

Not anymore PD. We moved back one year ago, before Christmas.

francagoestohollywood · 25/02/2009 19:37

No, I don't work in a bakery, so it couldn't possibly be me, but I realized - when in the UK - that if I wanted to be friendly I had to avoid talking about the weather at all costs.

to appear friendly, actually

I LOVE talking about the weather.

Dog walking has exposed me to a whole new world of small talk. Is fascinating, much more interesting than babies. You move really quickly on to castration, punishment and things like that. Marvellous of a morning, I love it.

YANBU - the weather is shit.

pointydog · 25/02/2009 19:42

oo I would like demanding small talk.

I sometimes try it myself but it falls flat.

was it your intonation, franca? Stressing the wrong syllable could be an irritant.

Gosh, I'd love to talk about castration.
I tend to talk about traffic nowadays.

ahundredtimes · 25/02/2009 19:44

Oh you could do it with me. I'm very good at it, it makes me laugh. It's only demanding because it's so hostile. I wouldn't want demanding in any other way in my small talk though.

So Pointy, I suppose you are enjoying this weather I suppose you wish it was snowing again now it's stopped DON'T YOU?
