To think that 'fart' is NOT a swear word!

OFSTED came to our school and I had my year 7 books taken in. One homework had been to write about an embarrassing incident and a boy had written about farting in class.

I was told the work in the books was a high standard and so on but inspector was surprised I hadn't 'pulled a child up for swearing in his book.'

Since WHEN was 'fart' a swear word!?

It isn't, in our house.

Bluestocking · 19/10/2014 22:11

It isn't a swear word. Was the inspector a Mary Whitehouse type?

ScrambledeggLDCcakeBOAK · 19/10/2014 22:12

Fart is not a swear word!

What do they want used instead flatulence?

clairemum22 · 19/10/2014 22:12

I don't let my children use it, if only because my parents would hate it if they them!

FartingIsntSwearing · 19/10/2014 22:13

Grin

Deputy head was having a hard time keeping a straight face giving me feedback!

Must have been a particularly sheltered inspector!

Fart is absolutely not a swear word. It is not the most pleasant word in the world, but its a long way from swearing.

Jollyphonics · 19/10/2014 22:15

I had never thought of "fart" as being remotely offensive until a few years ago when I heard a friend telling her son off for saying it. I was really surprised.

BadRoly · 19/10/2014 22:15

I don't think fart is a swear word but I do think it is one of those words that fall into the grey area of causing offence to a lot of people.

I do pull my 5yo and 7yo up on using it and encourage alternatives but don't bother with my 11yo or 13yo.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/10/2014 22:15

It is in Canada. Grown people say, "toot" and similar here . DD says fart, though Grin

Catsize · 19/10/2014 22:15

We weren't allowed to use it, I wouldn't use it now and I won't let my children use it. Sorry!

bealos · 19/10/2014 22:16

Ha ha ha. OFSTED are jokers.

cherrybombxo · 19/10/2014 22:17

'Fart' is a great word, it's almost onomatopoeic Grin

FartingIsntSwearing · 19/10/2014 22:18

But 'I was in assembly and suddenly a huge toot shot out of me' sounds - weird. Grin

With fart at least everyone knows what you mean.

Trump is what elephants do.
Wind could refer to the weather or a burp
Toot just sounds like you're driving and want to alert other drivers to your presence.
Pump is a gym shoe

Fart is a fart!

Are the people who dislike the word 'fart' the ones who encourage their children to use the word 'tuppence'?

BadRoly · 19/10/2014 22:26

We don't use tuppence Grin

But we do use 'eggy woofler' instead of fart with the younger 2. Because generally they are eggy.

FluffyMcnuffy · 19/10/2014 22:27

Fart is definitely not swearing and it makes me cringe when people use twee alternatives such as trump. If I'm trying to be polite I'd say "let one go" or "broke wind".

gingee · 19/10/2014 22:27

Pop and trump make me cringe so badly, they're the main contenders in this area, hearing an educated middle aged person say 'oops did you pop?' Confused

BuildYourOwnSnowman · 19/10/2014 22:30

it is in our house because dd uses at as one

'mummy you're a fart head', 'i'm going to fart in your face if you don't give me my toy back dbro' etc

If it is used correctly 'sorry mummy I just did a fart' then it's fine

she is 4 though.

OFSTED sound overzealous

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 19/10/2014 22:32

It's coarse. I don't allow my DC to use it and to be frank I would not be happy if it was written in their school book either. YABU>

SuedeEffectPochette · 19/10/2014 22:33

I don't like "fart" but my kids aren't allowed to say "stupid" or "idiot" either and they think "bum" is the height of rude. They aren't allowed to say "shut up" either. Come to think of it, I can see I am very over zealous with the words thing!

SaucyJack · 19/10/2014 22:35

I don't like the DCs saying it. We pop in this house.

squoosh · 19/10/2014 22:36

Anyone who is offended by 'fart' is a ninny.

Ninny is probably terribly offensive to them too.

What other word would you use if not "fart"? Confused

Pump? Trump? Those are so cringeworthy.

The word is fart. Yanbu.

CherryDolphin · 19/10/2014 22:41

And what the bloody hell is a "tuppence"? Is that another word for fart?

Icimoi · 19/10/2014 22:45

Ofsted can be ridiculous. At a friend's school, they made a massive issue out of an allegedly misplaced comma in a flip chart, saying it demonstrated inconsistent standards. The trouble was, there was no misplaced comma. The Ofsted inspector then tried to say it was in another class where in fact no flip chart had been used at all, then that it might have been changed - but it could be proved that it hadn't. At that point the inspector burst into tears and admitted she had got it wrong. However, Ofsted weren't prepared to admit that therefore their team might have been guilty of inconsistent standards.
