..is a highly suspect individual? smile

reddaisy Sun 20-Jul-14 22:22:45

I actively dislike it. DH actively disagrees with me.

pillowaddict Sun 20-Jul-14 22:22:48

Why are you watching it now? It's not Christmas eve! (Yanbu)

FidelineAndBombazine Sun 20-Jul-14 22:26:34

I'm not pillow. I'm just flouncing out of another AIBU (well I'm trying, but it's too hot for a full flounce really).

Then I got concerned that I was a lone IAWL fan sad

LadyLemongrab Sun 20-Jul-14 22:29:10

I'm afraid I struggle with it. But it's a family tradition of sorts so usually see it at so e point every Christmas.

It's not the story, but I just find most films from that era really grate on my nerves. So hammy and swoony and over dramatic.

There are many films I want to like, Casablanca, Gone with the wind, Brief encounter etc but just can't get past the ridiculous acting.

Crikey LadyLemon that's a bit of a clean sweep of the classics shock

Same here. I wonder if it is because of the fact that when he sees the alternative world if he hadn't been there his wife is such a sad sack spinster?

PhaedraIsMyName Sun 20-Jul-14 22:35:57

But Lady you're wrong about the others.

LadyLemongrab Sun 20-Jul-14 22:36:53

I know!

I'd also rather vomit up my own anus than watch glee or mama Mia or a west end musical so perhaps I'm rather out of of step with most people? ( I'm right though, they're all shite).

reddaisy Sun 20-Jul-14 22:37:33

Yes!

MilkandCereal Sun 20-Jul-14 22:38:13

Ridiculous acting in Casablanca?! That's blasphemy!

sinisterfish Sun 20-Jul-14 22:38:26

i dunno i'm a bit meh about it but i like the films i like, why would you judge someone as being suspect if they didn't like it, suspect in what sense?

sinisterfish Sun 20-Jul-14 22:38:59

what's your favourite film then op and i can judge if you're suspect too

effinandjeffin Sun 20-Jul-14 22:39:29

I agree OP but then I love films from that era.

Another favourite of mine is Mr Deeds Goes to Town (the original not the Adam Sandler version which sucked balls). I'm probably the exact opposite of ladylemongrab cos I love all those films she's just listed blush

Preciousbane Sun 20-Jul-14 22:39:45

I watch it every Christmas Eve

FidelineAndBombazine Sun 20-Jul-14 22:40:48

I'm afraid it's a TAAT sinister and lighthearted.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2138162-AIBU-to-go-off-a-friend-because-shes-never-heard-of-the-film-Brief-Encounter?

But actually 'sinister' would be a good word for it wink

LadyLemongrab Sun 20-Jul-14 22:41:45

They're great actors, they were acting in the accepted style of that era. It's just so forced and over the top though.

carlajean Sun 20-Jul-14 22:42:20

I think it's a tad off putting that, in the alternate, non James Stewart world, his wife becomes - shock horror _ a librarian. How dreadful.

FidelineAndBombazine Sun 20-Jul-14 22:42:21

To Have and to Have Not.

Nothing suspect about that. No siree.

StrawberryCheese Sun 20-Jul-14 22:43:06

I have never watched It's a Wonderful Life. shock

I'm sorry.

carlajean Sun 20-Jul-14 22:43:32

Mind you, I prefer Victoria Wood's version of Brief Encounter to the real thing

MilkandCereal Sun 20-Jul-14 22:43:51

People can insult IAWL all they want, but I draw the one at Casablanca.

FidelineAndBombazine Sun 20-Jul-14 22:45:53

Strawberry how is that possible?

Precious If ever I get flooded out, I'm coming to live in your spare room. Life sounds very civilized chez precious smile

FidelineAndBombazine Sun 20-Jul-14 22:46:42

I draw the one at Casablanca too wink

MilkandCereal Sun 20-Jul-14 22:46:52

The line,not the one.
