to think I'm not the only person who hates bacon.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I can't stand the smell out taste of bacon. Any time this comes up in conversation I'm made to feel like I'm in a strange and unreasonable minority, but I'm sure I'm not the only one to hate it's porky vileness!

Am I?

WorraLiberty Wed 06-Feb-13 18:10:46

My mate made me laugh. She's muslim and said that bacon eating appears to be the most badly kept secret amongst her family and friends...a bit like Catholics using contraception grin

JellyBelly10 Wed 06-Feb-13 18:10:51

My fingers couldn't keep up with my brain in my desire to spit out how much I hate bacon, so apologies for the typos!!

HanneHolm Wed 06-Feb-13 18:11:27

oh yes veggie sure.
I only knew one Jewish person ever. Plus she was veggie.

PhilMcAverty Wed 06-Feb-13 18:11:32

I think Hindus can eat pig but not cow? I may be wrong.

The smell of cooking bacon is the worst bit IMO.

Naoko Wed 06-Feb-13 18:13:17

Not only can I not stand bacon, I can't stand anything containing pork. I'm not religious, I just won't eat pork because I think it tastes awful.

It's harder to explain than vegetarianism in my experience. People just look at you as if you've grown an extra head in front of their eyes. And so many things contain pork that really don't need to - I mean I wouldn't like to deprive anyone of their bacon and egg sandwich, but do these cafes really need to put bacon bits and/or chorizo onto everything? I bought beef sausages, nice I thought, I love beef sausages - thought they tasted a bit funny and somehow not entirely pleasant, looked at the ingredients, ah yes, that'd be the sausage casing made from pork. How do muslims and jews cope?!

Theicingontop Wed 06-Feb-13 18:13:19

I'm vegetarian, and the only things I miss are streaky bacon and smoked salmon.

Had to be crispy and streaky, if you're gonna eat thick-cut bacon you may as well eat a pork chop.

<sigh>

KeepingCalmAndPostingNicely Wed 06-Feb-13 18:16:13

Yes worra I know plenty of Jewish people who sneak a bacon butty on the sly! As you say, Catholics and contraception. Good analogy!

Kafri Wed 06-Feb-13 18:16:30

sat reading this while having bacon and mozzarella roll for tea! yum!

HanneHolm Wed 06-Feb-13 18:17:39

i do think religious restrictions on food are silly. i know WHY but sheesh

PhilMcAverty Wed 06-Feb-13 18:18:48

I'm with you Naoko. I'm not a fan of anything porky at all.

My excuse is that pigs are intelligent and I'd not eat a dolphin either. <vague logic>

This is bacon

This is nasty

People who don't eat certain animals (and worship others) because their invisible friend of choice said so in a fictional book from thousands of years ago are stupid.

That is all.

However I love a bacon sarnie.

I quite like mine within thick slices of fresh white bread

With cold butter smeared on both sides of the bread.

Bacon HOT off the grill

I'm no normally a ketchup fan, however it may be appropriate in this circumstance.

The first bite should encounter textures, temperatures, flavours and contrasts.

(My happiest bacon sandwich story: I hitchhiked back from Cov Poly in the early 80's to my parents at the end of term. I arrived at the end of family Sunday lunch, my mum (bless her) got up and made a bacon sandwich, my dad got up and said "You've go some catching up to do!" and placed a bottle of Beaujolis in front of me. 'Sunday lunch' went on into the very early hours.)

MousyMouse Wed 06-Feb-13 18:26:43

you are not alone.
I can't stomach it in the mornings, the smell is just too much.
esp when sometimes it smells like pigs piss envy <- vom that is

ClippedPhoenix Wed 06-Feb-13 18:26:51

It's up to you whether you like the taste of bacon or not really isn't it.

I don't like the taste of salad stuff (I'm not a rabbit). I don't like the taste of lentils (pointless bitty things), so what?

herladyship Wed 06-Feb-13 18:27:13

YANBU

salty greasy yuk yuk confused

GoldenGreen Wed 06-Feb-13 18:27:51

I like a tiny bit of very crispy bacon in a turkey and cranberry sandwich. In all other circumstances, I hate it. And Naoko, I so agree with you on the fad for putting chorizo in everything. You can't even pick it out as it's horrible smoky vileness permeates everything.

TheVermiciousKnid Wed 06-Feb-13 18:29:09

I've been a vegetarian for a very, very long time. (I'm old.) I know people often say how even strict vegetarians love the smell of bacon - I can't stand it. Horrible, yucky stuff. YANBU.

Bunny - those pictures are both vile swimming in fat and greasy the stink gets everywhere YANBU

magimedi Wed 06-Feb-13 18:33:35

I was a proper vegetarian for four years. It was a bacon sarnie that turned me back to meat.

Complexnumber your parents sound really lovely.

OTTMummA Wed 06-Feb-13 18:59:46

Mmmmmmm,,, bacon.
Nothing better than a Greggs sub White roll cut to the hinge, proper butter both sides, 4 thick cut crispy hot rashers ( not smoked ) with brown and red sauce, little bit sweet, little bit tangy.
Perfect with a cold can of coke for a hangover.

exoticfruits Wed 06-Feb-13 19:14:03

I don't know anyone who doesn't like it-even the vegetarian friends say it is one thing they miss.

I could easily have either of those between two slices of mighty white, bunny. <dribble>

BumpingFuglies Wed 06-Feb-13 19:19:02

It's vile and bacon butties are worse than devils testicles.

Devil's testicles are rather nice, I find. With ketchup, obviously grin

ihearsounds Wed 06-Feb-13 19:20:21

Yadnbu. It stinks. My stomach turns when I smell bacon cooking. Takes a lot of self control to not throw up anymore. Then there's the amount of fat and grease. Yuk. Given the choice between bacon, well pork in general, I would rather starve. It is not religious reasons. It stems back from seeing something as a child.

When we have this chat in work, them saying oohh such and such does a lovely bacon butty, and I say no, I am looked at like I have 3 heads. It's mad really. Religious reasons, noone batters an eye lid. Personal choice and you are some weirdo.
