Is that too much to ask?

Brief summary

Kindle dies

Phone Kindle support centre

Support Centre advise over half and hour to switch and then switch it off again 5 times in total.

After this intensive trouble shooting, they cheerily announce my Kindle is dead.

It is one year and 3 weeks old they inform me. But as a good will gesture they will give me a 20% discount if I purchase it now.

Bloke seemed annoyed at my refusal. More annoyed when I asked nicely why it couldn't be repaired (too expensive) and if making me switch something off and on was really adaquate enough assessment to ascertain it was in fact dead.

He then said I will escalate your complaint and someone will be in touch with you in 24-48 hours.

In this time I discovered my kindle was actually easily fixed, gratis and easy to do yourself.

Finally after chasing up I got a response.

50% off a new kindle and a request for my bank card details Hmm I replied

I stated that I felt I had been coerced into buying a new Kindle under false pretences, and queried how many other people had possibly replaced when they had no need to.

Each time I chased I have been promised a speedy same day response.


I know it's dull and anal of me, but surely a response of some kind is in order? I suspect now they aren't getting any money out of me they are ignoring me.

Yay, go for it! Keep gwetting on at them -- why should we make life easy for them when they have obviously fucked up? It would be interesting to find out if the problem is a common one or not.......

Bunch of arse. People on call centres have no idea about the tech, they just read from a script.

I once spoke to a guy from sky who told me to unplug the box and wait for 10 seconds so all the electricity could drain out. I asked the fella if I could speak to someone else, he asked why, I said because I've got qualifications in electronic engineering and he was a fucking idiot.

Depends on which model and whether you like taking stuff apart to see what it's made of Grin it's not actually that hard honest.

If its a blank screen than first off give it a bloody long charge and a gentle hoovering round your switch then try the hard reset again.

The bastards, Mamas and Papas are on my shit list. Paid for a stairgate, had the fixtures missing from it. Called cutomer services and was told to see if I could find the bits that I needed on ebay because they don't know who manufactored the gates.

I once had an epic problem with the sky broadband. They refuse to believe it was anything to do with BT digging up the street [it was) - so each time I called them I got to the point where I read there part of the script before they did Grin

My dd's Kindle died in August. She bought it in June the year before and Amazon have given us a $20 voucher off a new one as a gesture. We have four kindles in this house and have bought two as gifts. We all love our Kindles and have been very good customers to Amazon.

I have been following the other thread and been googling and my dd's kindle problem is very common. As I see it, the problem is a 'fault' not an electronic item running its course after lots of use. I don't feel like being a good customer in the future.

I used to wrong foot the IT helpdesk we had in one of my previous jobs - when I rang up and said that the computer was wrong and they asked me to reboot I would tell them that I already had done (who wouldn't before ringing the helpdesk???) and I would get the reply... "Oh...... Errmmm...... This is your fault reference number, someone will get back to you". When they rang back 3 days later with someone that had an idea, it had normally been fixed by a 3 min call to DH who somehow managed to diagnose it and sort it in less time than the initial helpdesk call.

Use a knife in the clips to wiggle the back loose then slide down to take it off the centre clips.

then press the handy button marked Reset. It's just above where the switch is.

Taking out and putting back the battery can also help. But as engineerydaddyman will tell you removal and replacement of the same batteries is the official way to attempt all repairs on all electronics, including the Hadron Collider and International Space Station.

I am going to try this tonight after work - will see if the DC can offer any help too.

To all the smug people who are saying their kindle is fine and they use it everyday - be careful, it might just give up on you tomorrow without warning.

Right above the button you switch on with little black button?

If its not the keyboard version, mines a 3 it may be else where. Or try the battery see if it forced a reset.

I don't think under 18 months is an acceptable life span for the kindle

If they guarantee them for a year, then a year will be the expected working life. Like all the electrical stuff that dies a week after the guarantee runs out - they know how long they will last, give or take a while, when they make them, and guarantee them for slightly less time. If your whatsit lasts longer than it was guaranteed for, it's a bonus. Breaking while still under guarantee probably means it actually is faulty, as they are designed and made to last as long as the guarantee period.

And yeah, you're right. Take the battery out, wipe the connections with a dry cloth and put it back in.

Works on cars too!
