To think a tumble dryer should last TWO YEARS?

I bought a tumble dryer through next directory in November 2010. It is a whirlpool sixth sense. It broke last year, stopped tumbling, whirlpool via Next came and fixed it.

It broke again on Monday, same problem. I have been chasing them since then to get it fixed. Told that it is "out of guarantee" "someone will call whirlpool and get back to me" and "I'm talking to them now, will call you back shortly."

I am PISSED OFF! I want my TWO HUNDRED POUND dryer fixing/replacing!

AIBU to think that if I spend that much on a white good it should last longer than 21 months?

I think they should reasonably last six years and I'm pretty sure that the sale of goods act agrees, I'd be quoting that at them. And if it's the same reason for the repair then the repair is within even their warranty.

Call trading standards and tell Next and Whirlpool you are doing just that, I suspect all repairs have to be guaranteed if the same problem has happened then it wasn't fixed properly I bet they will sort it.

Our 6th sense whirlpool has been going very happily for 7 years, so definitely complain.

out of guarantee is bollocks.

the Sale of Goods act states quite clearly that the item should last a reasonable length of time.

I would say 8 years would not be unreasonable.

Did you use a credit card to buy it (or hire purchase) because you can claim via them too. From years of reading Which you have a valid case, and should win a case in the small claims court.

I have email the CEO's of next and whirlpool. Next called me a liar in regards to having spoken to anyone there and this is why I have not been called back by them!

Tweeted it too! Will keep you all posted. I have been told I can have an engineer out but it will cost between £85-120! I don't think so!

I only bought the bloody thing through next because we'd literally just moved house and my old dryer blew up! I was on crutches with SPD and baby due the end of the month! I thought, ho, ho, ho, that it would be the easiest and most reliable way of getting my new appliance.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the sale of goods act say goods should last a reasonable amount of time?

I don't think 21months is reasonable so tell them to repair it (for free)

I've told them I want it repairing for free. They said no but later admitted that it is indeed six years as a "reasonable amount of time" before back tracking!

I don't think whirlpool is a crappy brand but right now I'm not convinced otherwise.

I have a Whirlpool dryer and my friend freaked out when she saw that I'd bought it because apparently her mother had one which was crappy and didn't last. However I don't know that that single data point is really enough to go on Wink

My Whirlpool was a pile of rubbish, and I regret not making them sort it out when it broke down 1 month outside of its rubbishly short 12 month warranty (evidently they have no confidence in their machines!). I would stick at them, if you can manage without a washing machine for the duration of their attempts at squirming out of responsibility.

It's the dryer so I have the option (today) of the line luckily but nothing is drying because it's so still and humid today! I don't have a big airing rack so nowhere else to dry. I have silly tiny radiators that aren't on anyway! Grrr!

Sorry, I did read it's a dryer so not sure why I was thinking washing machine! That gives you a bit longer to hold out for a repair assuming you have somewhere to air dry your laundry.

The whole reason they give you a free 12 month guarantee is to persuade you to just go out and buy a new one if it breaks after that.

Sale of good act says otherwise - they need to last a reasonable length of time.

Complain. Any problems and I've heard writing directly to the CEO can work wonders - their team tend to be a bit more consumer-focused than the complaints department.

I'm with everyone else, sale of goods act = six years.
I have a 27 year old tumble dryer. It still works, I bought it to dry ds's nappies in winter. He's a bank manager now!

I agree with everyone else. You have the right to it either fixed or a new one. Do not be fobbed off, no matter how long it takes to sort. Your contract is with whomever you bought it from, ensure they sort it for you.

If they argue, just tell them you're going to get trading standards involved. I fight tooth and nail for every single thing we buy that goes wrong within a certain amount of time and have won every single time.

It really annoys me the way they try to wriggle out of fixing things, quoting warranties. They tell such lies.
