To expect my GP to understand that I am not a crazy Mum and my DD is really ill?

I know this is going to come out as a (badly typed) rant so apologies in advance.

My DD has had a fever, diarrhoea and other symptoms like a rash and vomiting (some of then on and off) for over a week. She has had Calpol for the entire time at my GPs recommendation. Then she developed joint pain, really chapped lips, strawberry red tongue covered in blisters and a puffy face. She was screaming in pain at one point. So we've been to the GPs twice and the out of hours once but they keep saying viral infection. I do understand that but surely she should be improving by now? I have done the tumbler test and it's not that sort of rash. My mum used to be a paediatric nurse and when I told her of all of DD's symptoms, she said it sounds just like Kawasaki syndrome. I Wikipedia'd it (dangerous, I know) but there was my daughter's face, with exactly the symptoms. It's rare but can be VERY serious. AIBU to go shooting off up there for for the fourth time, laptop in hand?

Why not take her to casualty? The minor injuries unit so they can check her over.

Chil1234 · 19/01/2011 11:14

I think if you haven't had any luck after three visits, a fourth isn't going to help much. Either see a different GP or go to A&E. Good luck

Karaishere · 19/01/2011 11:14

Don't be fobbed off, if you are really concerned take her to the hospital. Hope your dd is better soon:)

pranma · 19/01/2011 11:15

YANBU-as long as you dont blame them-if it is rare then mention what your mum[and her prfessional expertise]said and ask them to look it up-otherwise I think you need a second opinion.
Your poor dd

valiumredhead · 19/01/2011 11:16

A and E if you are seriously worried. Stop googling!

LoopyLoopsIsNoLongerFestive · 19/01/2011 11:16

Print off the info. They might think it's OTT but may be worth it. Happens on Doctors all the time!

Onetoomanycornettos · 19/01/2011 11:21

Go to A and E, that particular syndrome has a very distinct set of symptoms, and you could mention that your mum is a nurse and suggested it, but there are other things that could cause that (Hand, Foot and Mouth causes ulcerated mouths, tongues and causes a rash plus the usual virus symptoms, both mine have had it). I would not keep bothering the same doctor, but I absolutely would bother someone else to get a second opinion, and so minor injuries/A & E would be better.

systemsaddict · 19/01/2011 11:25

I would go to A&E if you're really worried, sometimes you do need to keep going back as they need to hear more about the progression of symptoms. Ds was ill once with something nasty (similar symptoms to your dd though not Kawasaki, though I remember googling it) and ended up being admitted but we had to go back to the hospital several times. A&E picked up on red flags which the other dr.s had missed - but they also had the information that he wasn't getting any better after an extra 48 hours to draw on. Ds' did start with a viral infection, so they were right at that point.

HappySeven · 19/01/2011 11:27

This probably doesn't help at all but it sounds a bit like Scarlet Fever. I know quite a few people that have had it recently and it's often missed by GPs it seems. It must be very frustrating for you and I hope you get a diagnosis and treatment soon.

wendihouse22 · 19/01/2011 11:28

A&E. This very day.

Bingtata · 19/01/2011 11:32

Get a second opinion, doctors can get it wrong just like everyone else. Don't be fobbed off and trust your instincts.

I think it sounds like scarlet fever too, but get it checked properly. I would say A&E too.

It could be scarlett fever? Dd2 had this last year, i took her to 3 different doctors to be told 'just a virus, give calpol', in the end i googled her syptoms (as she had a rash and purple tounge), i took her back to the out of hours GP and told them 'dd2 has scarlett fever' and they said 'oh, yes she has' Shock. They gave her 2 weeks of antibiotics which kicked in after a couple of days and she soon recovered but i was so angry that none of the doctors picked up on the syptoms.

Dd2 is ill at the moment and again the GP is saying to just give calpol, i worry about how much these GP's actually know. Dd2 has had a temp of 39 for 5 days and is now being sick.

stump · 19/01/2011 11:46

I'd go with Scarlet Fever but you do really need to get her checked out. My DD has just recovered from Scarlet Fever and before she had the antibiotics she was really not very well. If it isn't treated it can have very serious complications so you do need to get her seen. Also it could be something else. Let us know how she is.

hannarbanana · 19/01/2011 11:48

I agree with everyone, definately A&E, but if you ever get fobbed off by your GP again instead of using google you should phone NHS direct. I got fobbed off by my GP when my daughter was 3 months old, she had blisters all over her face, took her to the doctor, he told me milk spots and said to put E45 on the spots. Obviously trusted the doc but something in my mind was saying no this isn't right. Put E45 on her face within two minutes she was screaming and her face went red and swollen, phoned NHS Direct and they got me an emergency doc appointment at the hospital. Turned out it was eczema, still havent figured out why her skin had such a reaction to E45 though. Gahh sorry long story but ALLWAYS trust your natural mothers instinct! Usually mothers do know best.Hope you get it sorted hun

LoopyLoopsIsNoLongerFestive · 19/01/2011 11:50

YEs, A&E seems a good plan.

not1not2 · 19/01/2011 12:07

A&E todaysay it's been going on for ages
say a paed nurse suggested Kawasakis

hope she gets better soon

monkeyflippers · 19/01/2011 12:22

Yeah go to a&e. Let us know what they say.

fannyfoghorn · 19/01/2011 12:24

Good luck.

abenstille · 19/01/2011 12:24

Id do a and e too, but if you decide not to, Ive also done out of hours a couple of times at night and theyve been really good too. Poor thing, hope shes better soon.

JennyRobyn · 19/01/2011 12:24

Yes straight to A&E as they can pick up things that may have otherwise been missed.

ddubsgirl · 19/01/2011 12:30

a&e!now! my friend had taken her boy who was 3 at the time to gp he fobbed her off saying he had gastic flu and called her a neurotic mother, she told me he had a pain in his tummy on the right side, told het it could be his appendix and to take him to a&e,3 other parents told her the same,so she took him, turned out it was his appendix and he had a bit of poo that had got stuck and was rock hard and this was the cause of alot of his sickness over the last 18 months!!!!nothing could get past and was backing up and why he wasnt growing and looked so pale all the time,he was lucky it went when it did or it could have been fatal.
