Mumsnet Reviews rating system

How does the Mumsnet Reviews Index work?

ovensThe basics
Mumsnetters rate products and places by awarding them between one and five stars for particular attributes. These attributes vary according to the product type – MNers rate pushchairs, for example, on whether they’re easy to fold, steer and transport – as well as on their durability and value for money.

We rank each product by totalling their stars, then dividing the total by the number of reviews to reach an average overall score.

Then what?
Naturally, Mumsnet’s Patented Reviews Algorithm® is all a bit secret squirrel. But we can tell you that we factor in the number of reviews each product has received. So, if two products have the same overall score, the one with most reviews will rank highest.

After that, we give a bit of extra weight to ‘freshness’ – if one product has positive recent reviews it will rank higher than one with equally positive, but older, reviews.

For added robustness, we’ll take into account each reviewer’s length of service. So a product with positive reviews by long-standing MNers will rank a little higher than one with equally positive reviews by recently-registered users.
