Bounty Mutiny: write to your local NHS trust

Bounty Mutiny logoWant to get on board with the Bounty Mutiny? Do you share Mumsnetters' concerns about direct sales reps being allowed onto hospital in-patients wards? Following Health Minister, Dan Poulter's letter to NHS trusts, we need your help!

We at MNHQ have written to the Chief Executives of all the hospital trusts in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland that currently hold contracts with Bounty, but we're asking you to add your voice by writing to your own hospital trust or health board to outline your concerns and ask for their response to the Health Minister's call to review their arrangements with Bounty.

We've provided a suggested template below - but any personal details or stories you can add about your own experiences on the wards will help a lot.

Dear xxx,

Following Health Minister, Dan Poulter MP’s letter to you of the 24 June 2013 calling for all NHS trusts to review the practice of allowing representatives from private companies on maternity wards I am writing to share my concerns.

As a local resident, I want to have confidence that my local hospital will always put the interest of patients first. It is difficult to believe that you are doing this if you continue to allow data collection and hard sales techniques on maternity wards.

Prompted by user concern, Mumsnet conducted a nationwide survey of new mothers who have given birth in NHS hospitals since May 2012. The survey showed the following results:
• 56% said the Bounty representative had invaded their privacy (eg, by flinging back closed curtains or interrupting infant feeding);
• 48% were not made aware that the provision of their personal data to Bounty was completely voluntary;
• 29% felt pressured into having their baby's photograph taken;
• 60% were not told that their personal data would be passed on to other commercial organisations; and
• 82% think it's unacceptable for the NHS to allow commercial sales reps on hospital wards in any circumstances.
• 17% were given the impression they couldn’t claim child benefit without giving their personal data.

Please note that these figures post-date the most recent changes to Bounty's code of conduct for its hospital sales staff.

New mothers are often exhausted and feeling vulnerable. They rightly expect hospitals to be wards to be a safe place, not somewhere they should be subjected to hard sell tactics. It is hard to imagine mobility scooter sales representatives being given access to an orthopaedics ward.

I believe that your trust's contract with Bounty results in the unacceptable use of direct sales tactics on vulnerable post-partum mothers. I would be very interested to hear your response to this, and to the following questions:

• Are you confident you are ‘maintaining women’s dignity and respect shortly after the birth of a baby’ as the Health Minister asks of you?
• In the light of public concern and communication from the Health Minister will you be terminating your contract with Bounty?
• When is the current contract up for renewal?

In light of the Minister’s letter I believe this requires urgent attention and look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Yours sincerely,
xxxx
