https://news.stv.tv/scotland/nearly-60-of-high-schools-sign-up-for-lgbt-youth-scotland-inclusivity-scheme

'Almost 60% of Scotland’s secondary schools have adopted an LGBT+ charter in order to support inclusivity for staff and pupils. The scheme, which has now been taken on by 212 of the country’s 357 high schools, provides training to challenge prejudice and bring equality to the core of the school.
Founded by LGBT Youth Scotland, the number of schools signing up to the charter has been hailed a success with an additional 40 primary schools and 21 colleges and universities also either awarded charter status or working towards it.
However, the charity still say there is further to go with a target to reach 75% of secondary schools in place over the coming year.'

A reminder of the recent issues with LGBTYS:

'An employee at gay rights charity has been suspended after historical allegations of safeguarding issues.'

'An abuse survivor has accused the SNP Government of a "heartbreaking betrayal" after finding out that a minister forwarded a personal complaint about a quango, to the quango.
LGBT Youth Scotland (LGBTYS), which is part funded by the Scottish Government ,was forced to refer itself to Police Scotland after historical grooming allegations came to light.'

The scheme, which provides schools with training to challenge prejudice, has also been adopted by some primary schools, colleges and universities.

What can parents do? Are SOS Scotland on this at all? Are there any template letters

ArabeIIaScott · 04/05/2023 22:35

I'm not managing to open SOS Scotland's website, Pines. This is on their Twitter:

Not sure if this is the place to be asking, but are there any mums with kids in the system in Scotland who are active over here atm? What's it like from your/your kids experiences?

Trying for kids atm, and the prospect of this gender stuff in schools is really concerning and I keep hearing about & seeing more and more of it - Is it actually as bad as it sounds?

Ciochan · 05/05/2023 01:49

212 high schools at £1000 each, multiplied by 3 levels of award = a nice little earner for indoctrinating the youth (from the brochure here https://www.lgbtyouth.org.uk/the-lgbt-charter/the-lgbt-charter-for-schools/)

I'm not sure if schools can just go directly for the Gold level or if they have to complete bronze and/or silver to "qualify" for gold, but schools love buying getting awards.

@SpicyMoth I left teaching in Scotland to be a SAHM just as the LGBTYS stuff was really taking off, but I think it will vary depending on the school and its staff. Some schools will maybe take more of a "box ticking" approach to getting the award, do the training, get the kids to make some displays, etc. But in a school where some staff are extremely motivated about it, there's more likely to be groups and events and a more obvious "ethos" around it.

LGBTYS have used Barrhead High as a case study on their website, so here's their "equalities" Twitter account https://twitter.com/Equality_BHS Spoiler alert: only one type of equality mentioned.

rogdmum · 05/05/2023 06:26

chiochan some schools presumably might be able to go straight into Gold but most seem to work their way up.

The questionnaire they have to complete is here:

My son is in S1 at secondary. There are no trans kids in his year at his school according to him so doesn’t seem to have any effect day to day. Toilets are self contained cubicles, sports teams are single sex (so far). Girls are surprisingly physical aggressive, they kick/ punch the boys and ask them what they are going to do about it, it’d to take a brave soul to chance entering the changing rooms.

That said I know teachers in the school and writing reports/ parents evening is a source of stress as some have adopted different names at school. Definitely been weaponised by some children.

They have a silver award for this and are also a silver UN rights respecting school.

I don’t think it’s as bad as it sounds generally but I think it’s probably year group/ school specific.

Varies hugely depending on the school. Where I am the issues are present but not overly worrying, so far.

Local secondary is largely unaffected - there are some kids who say they are 'trans', one teacher who ardently pushes 'trans' issues. They have had debates, fairly well natured ones, on the subject.

Toilets are all sex segregated.

My advice is to get involved in your parent council, if you have concerns raise them, speak to councillors, etc.

@ArabeIIaScott @Desperatelyseekingcommonsense @Ciochan
Tysm for your responses!
Sounds like it might be something to worry about at a bit of a later date rather than now, but still definitely something to look into when the time comes - Thanks for the suggestion of getting involved in parent councils, I think that's something I'll likely end up doing in future! <3

NurseCranesRolodex · 06/05/2023 09:46

Schools having the usual over enthusiastic do gooding type to champion mens rights, minimise children's rights by reinforcing sex class stereotypes and Ingraining internalised homophobia, brilliant. Let's see the numbers of self declaring non binary kids rocket as drag queens start teaching 'fun' classes about dildos.
I'd rather see gay rights being enshrined and much more work on homophobia instead of this box ticking. I can say from experience the champions of this rubbish are commonly the most judgemental, conformist types ever.

Pinesinthedunes · 06/05/2023 17:57

Does anyone know what the criteria is for a silver award?

Scoldsidol · 06/05/2023 18:35

Our school skipped silver but the criteria to get an award seems to involve:
Cakes Sales on Wear Purple days
Posters of ‘important’ LGBT+ people (provided by TIE and trotted out every year)
A few assemblies by the much-feted in-house non-binary/trans pupils and, the occasional gay or lesbian pupil if they get a look in
An LGBT lunchtime group
Lots of self-congratulatory Twitter posts on being ‘inclusive’ with aforesaid feted pupils and rainbows

This was a few years ago so I don’t think it was woven in to the curriculum quite yet - although apparently there was an excruciating biology lesson where the teacher had a go at the notion of females having penises and males having vaginas. This was met with howls of derision and sniggers and disbelief that the teacher actually believed what they were teaching. Let’s just say that this view was challenged robustly.

I just wished the school could engender a culture of zero tolerance of bullying for all its pupils and tackled racism, homophobia/transphobia, sectarianism, sexism and ableism without having to contract out to third party organisations. Surely it would be more meaningful and sincere coming from the staff and pupils themselves.
