New women's sex based rights group in Canada - which is currently beyond woke!

Someone shared this link on facebook.

Not sure how many here are in Canada, but either way this seems like good (and brave) news.

Women: fact not feeling www.cawsbar.ca/

(I like that - fact not feeling!)

" ... We believe that protecting women’s and girls’ sex-based rights is the most pressing social issue facing us today.

Although sex is a protected characteristic within our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in 2017, the Canadian Human Rights Act was amended to include “gender identity or expression” as a category protected against discrimination (Bill C-16).

This amendment was adopted without substantial due diligence or meaningful consultation with women's advocacy groups.

The reality of such an amendment which does not precisely define what “gender identity or expression” means, instead relying on a vague concept of "internal sense" of oneself is that a male may simply declare himself to be a woman (gender self-identification), and demand he be granted all of the hard-won rights and protections women have fought for over the decades. This includes the right to access female-only spaces, services and resources.

Such an amendment also means that “woman” is reduced to a meaningless, equally undefinable concept. The harmful outcome of having "woman" or "girl" no longer accurately defined in public policy as "biological female" is that women's and girls' sex-based rights and protections will be lost forever.

As members of caWsbar, we are committed to demanding that Canadian women's sex-based Charter rights are upheld uniformly and consistently from coast to coast to coast. ... "

Fantastic.
I think we should be sending this article medium.com/@JonnnyBest/why-im-not-non-binary-86cf033b270d?
to relevant folks in Canada who have just not thought about this other than the gut "let's be inclusive!" reaction.

'Women: Fact not feeling' is a fantastic slogan!

cwg1 · 14/12/2019 13:34

Absolutely agree - brilliant slogan - sums everything up in just a few words, and a lovely logo, too.

All good wishes, good vibes and good luck for the campaign Flowers

The fact that these women’s groups are appearing in different places is heartening. There have been times when it’s felt very lonely being gender critical.

And as others have said, great slogan! I shall go read the rest now.

Oh, I am glad to see this, I've been looking for something in Canada to connect us, and coming up pretty empty-handed.

cordeliavorkosigan · 14/12/2019 18:55

I am attending an event this week where one of the funders has a diversity questionnaire that has to be distributed. I know that this little leaflet has 'Gender: male female non-binary' in about the 3rd line, meaning that the phrase 'non-binary' is right in the middle of the page where the eye is drawn.
I am going to write in 'none' and underneath, Sex: female. And I'm going to copy in a link to the above article and maybe even send it to the funder.
I am in a role where I don't think I can be openly gender critical because if I had a lot of negative attention from students it would damage my career and maybe threaten my job. I don't have any confidence that my institution would stand up for me; they have not defended other feminists I don't think.
I am very much having an "... and then they came for me" moment.

JontyDoggle37 · 14/12/2019 18:58

Fantastic - so calmly and clinically stated - as they say, fact not feelings!

cordeliavorkosigan · 14/12/2019 19:02

In fact, it would be amazing to get this one little form changed, to allow a gender- none option and a sex: male /female option.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for how to open this conversation (with the funder) with people who have probably not thought about gender, and are genuinely trying to improve equality, diversity and inclusion?

SetYourselfOnFire · 14/12/2019 19:06

Awesome. I thought I'd be in dire straits this week but there are signs of hope.

popehilarious · 14/12/2019 19:22

Cordelia, don't assume they haven't thought about gender. On my experience these gender options are there precisely because someone who defines as e.g. non-binary has pushed for it.

popehilarious · 14/12/2019 19:23

(Not saying you shouldn't contest it, of course!)

cordeliavorkosigan · 14/12/2019 20:10

That's a good point. I know two people at this funder. Maybe I will try to suss out whether they in particular have thought about it.

BaileysMadeMeDoIt · 15/12/2019 08:20

Excellent and very encouraging. I've bought myself a "Woman: adult human female" t-shirt and now I may get a "Fact not Feeling" one printed too.
