Does this mean Guiding could have a man as CEO?

Girl Guiding is advertising for a new CEO.

Billy Connolly?

I know this is not funny. but we need relief from the despair

CrackpotsArePots · 21/09/2018 09:11

That didn't work.

Try this:

BlardyBlar · 21/09/2018 09:15

”While Girlguiding’s young members may be female only, our staff team is mixed gender.”

Sounds like it is policy (though obviously they are conflating gender and sex). Perhaps it’s hard to argue that staff, who presumably aren’t in direct contact with the girls) must be female. I presume in the past though, most who would apply for such a post would have been women.

CrackpotsArePots · 21/09/2018 09:21

They mention in the advert are Stonewall Diversity champions. To the casual observer that might suggest they mean they welcome lesbians. But let's not forget who Stonewall and its strangely self-attacking CEO are really fighting for now

averylongtimeago · 21/09/2018 09:52

To my mind it is another nail in the coffin of Guiding being exclusively female.
Don't forget, while trans girls and trans women are welcome all girls together leaders are told to encourage girls to leave if they no longer "identify" as female.

I thought the same when I saw Stonewall there. How sad that it has such negative connotations now. Even the word diversity has become a red flag when it should be a positive thing.

Sad thing is, averylongtimeago, that it would be better for it to be openly mixed sex than mixed sex by stealth. The latter is potentially so much higher risk due to being unacknowledged.

averylongtimeago · 21/09/2018 15:04

If they came right out and said :"mixed sex" told parents, did full impact/ risk assessments and discussed openly what that would mean in terms of same sex use of facilities, then they know that there would be an outcry. A lot of leaders would leave, as would parents.

But at least they would be honest.

"A Guide is honest, reliable and can be trusted" first law of Guiding.

More proof that Stonewall Diversity Champion = safeguarding red flag.

titchy · 21/09/2018 15:51

But their young members are NOT female only - they are open to males too Confused

OvaHere · 21/09/2018 15:53

That's what I thought titchy if fact there are many threads on here discussing how far the GG have gone in order to make themselves inclusive of males.

OvaHere · 21/09/2018 15:57

Useful crossover thread and a reminder that top 100 female CEO award winner Phillip Bunce has involved himself advising GG.

So yes the chance of GG becoming overrun with males especially at a high level is very likely.

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 21/09/2018 15:57

I'm thinking we're going to have to make a new girl's organisation from scratch at this rate.

MoggyP · 21/09/2018 15:58

It's not another nail. The staff and volunteers have always been mixed sex, so there is no change.

averylongtimeago · 21/09/2018 16:03

But Moggy, all members have always been women- men can be helpers, but not members.

Just like howall girls school can have male head teachers. And there has been a man as the head of the Mothers' Union.

This is an appointment which is open to both sexes and always has been Any organisation with standards appoints the best person for the role.

GrimDamnFanjo · 21/09/2018 16:25

It's not new, but frankly the staff have little autonomy. It's the volunteers who control the policies and do most of the decision making. The guide association has a strict hierarchical structure. The volunteers have the final say. It's quite rare these days for a charity to have volunteers make the decisions rather than advise.

averylongtimeago · 21/09/2018 17:24

Really? Final say???
I've been a member since I was 7 and I don't recall being asked about thus.

By volunteers I meant the chief guide and other senior advisers not the actual peeps on the ground!
