Apparently Hooters in Bristol has closed - I'm not sure if it is just that branch, because it wasn't making money, or if the whole chain has gone down.
I would like to think that it's because men in Bristol weren't interested in going to places that demean women, but sadly, I think it's more likely that Hooters was really in competition with the even sleazier lapdancing clubs, and the sleazier option has won - the council just renewed the licences for a whole load of them.

There's a sense in which Hooters is actually worse than lap dancing clubs, in the way that it claims to be a restaurant round the corner from Marks & Spencer, whereas at least a lap dancing club is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. It's the equivalent of the "mainstreaming of pornography" when girlie shows start to seem ordinary, just another business in the high street.

I agree with TeiTetua. Hooters claims to be just another restaurant (my brother in law went there for lunch regularly and my sister was appalled) while normalizing porn culture.

This is a great result.
Wow.
I am rather amazed as Hooters seems very successful in the US.
ANd I agree about it normalising objectification and pornification.
I went into a Hooters in the US by mistake / without knowing what it was all about. It was on one of those long stretches of freeway in Florida with just mile after mile of fast food joints. You know, McDonald's, IHOP, Taco Bell, McDonald's, IHOP, Taxo Bell endlessly....then we saw a Hooters and just drove in because we wanted a steak.
It was horrible and shocking. Made worse by my then BF who thought it was great. Dumoed him on the plane on the way back to UK!
Great news. One of the reasons it may have failed is that it is in a really dead area of town - never mind eh!

Hooters is infinitely worse than a lap-dancing club. The idea of it being a family-friendly environment... urgh!
Hooters never really struck me as being a Bristolly kind of place (excuse the pun).

Hooray!! I live around the corner and have been very worried about it, although I have noticed it is mostly half empty even when the pizza express opposite is full.
What a victory and agree with Jenai that is isn't a very Bristol place.

Good bloody riddance!! I agree with TeiTetua and others that it's worse than sleazy bars. It's like Page 3 and Carry On films for me, just allows girls to grow up with the idea that getting them out for the lads is to be their station and their purpose in life and they're either the Pretty Girl With Big Norks or the Old Boot, with nothing in between.

I disagree that the reason it went bust is because of location. It is JUST around the corner from the thriving Watershed area. I HOPE it went bust because Brizzle is more discerning and not so crass...
Completely agree that it is worse than lap dancing clubs due to normalisation
there was soooo many comments on the local newspaper (part of daily mail group)website when it was in planning stages

The best thing about this from my POV is that DH will no longer have an excuse to ask me how 'Bristols against Hooters' is going.

Agree that it is worse than lapdancing clubs, at least lapdancing clubs don't pretend to be family friendly. Also, I hate that sort of innocent dumb bouncy image of Hooters, Playboy etc.

Good. Vile places.
I expect it was crippling heating bills that did it...

I read the report re lap dancing clubs. It isnt very often that I hope Pervy Stringfellow is right. It came across that he thinks they will all close in other cities and just leave London with the sex trade. In my dreams! Then we can really concentrate on London!
GREAT news! I remember all the MN discussion surrounding that at the time. Hopefully it did close down due to lack of demand. It is, after all, a bit sad to go to Hooters, isn't it.
Hurray!
and hurray for the SEV law change.
