Anybody find this www.game.co.uk/Games/DSi-and-DS-Lite/Puzzle/Jack-the-Ripper/~r351486/ a bit disconcerting?

I had to do a double take--first when I saw the game and then when I saw the age.

When did violent murder and butchery become a means of entertainment? Jeez, whatever next. Can we not bombard the makers with..., well, can't we just bombard them?

lionheart · 14/05/2011 17:02

I was wondering about that, too, Thomas1969.

Bloody hell, I just looked on amazon to see if I could find out who made it and was directed to a page for a Jack the Ripper costume, get this, "recommended for age 36 months and up". Complete with doctor's bag, bloody knife and gloves with label.

Someone take a look and tell me I really did see it.

The one you linked to is a hidden object game, so it is the theme that is the problem, not the gameplay. Is it because it is seen as historical, and therefore somehow not real, that it is acceptable to have JtR as a theme, but not Steven Wright?

Just googled Jack the Ripper game and a link came up for a game on addictinggames (where I bet loads of your kids go to play stuff). I don't think it's the same one you are talking about, but worth a mention. The description is "The “ladies of the night” go down so much easier than the men do. Take control of this murderous legend and wreak havoc on London streets." It has a Teen Caution warning i.e. it is suitable for over 13s.

And here is the costume for 3 years and up

It's like opening up a weird portal into a parallel universe. Only it isn't.

I'm just wondering what the reaction at school would be if you sent your child in this costume for the Victorian day.

Perhaps in 100 years there'll be a Fred and Rosemary West game. Mindbogglingly disturbing.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 15/05/2011 01:15

When I was a child I had a book and it was basically recreations of famous murders with photo's and captions, the purpose being to look for clues in the photos and captions and find out who the murder was.

I don't see this as being much different from that tbh. It's a detective game where players will search for the identity of Jack the Ripper.

If it had been a game where players take on the identity of Jack the Ripper and murder prostitutes - that would be a different story altogether.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 15/05/2011 01:15

*murderer was.

lionheart · 15/05/2011 10:16

'Game' and 'Jack the Ripper' don't really work for me.
