weather warnings for SE and west Wales 12th June

Am going to try and do a thread for each new days set of warnings if I can.
met office warnings here

Following todays exceptionally wet weather in parts of Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire etc and the awful floods in Wales, unfortunately there is little respite. The weather wont be as bad, but heavy thunder showers could become localised downpours in these areas.

Looking ahead, heavy showers through the week, but some respite for most at some point. Friday into Saturday is another cause for concern with more very heavy rain forecast.

Thanks, OYBBK. Presumably we have the evil jetstream to blame?

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 11/06/2012 21:44

Exactly mooncupgoddess! It's in the wrong place for us.

Somewhat concerned about Fridays low pressure!

I thought jetstreams were supposed to keep us warm?? I've been so so cold today :(
OYBBK, thankyou by the way for all your updates and warnings. :)

Moodykat · 11/06/2012 23:21

OYBBK - you are a star with all your weather posts. But, are we going to get any more summer?!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 12/06/2012 07:35

I think we will, but probably not this month (bar perhaps a couple of warmer drier days mid week next week - maybe)

mumat, you are very welcome :) - that is the gulf stream, which is a warm current of water helping keeping the west side more temperate. The jet stream is like a conveyer belt of weather high up in the atmosphere - bringing us low pressure after low pressure.

warnings speak for themselves today.

watch out for friday/saturday.

I've just had a look at the charts on netweather. It's interesting to watch Friday's low pressure system forming out to the SW and then move across the UK, over several days. I can see why you think we should be worried about it!

SoozyWoozy · 12/06/2012 09:55

Chilly and drizzly where I am in West Sussex. A lot of the surface water on the roads has gone, but obviously the flooding will take longer to clear. And won't be helped by even more rain...

NeedToSleepZZZ · 12/06/2012 14:56

thank you badbadkitten, I have my fingers crossed and my summer dresses in the wash for the 2 day summer next week then Wink

have had the heating on today as it's so cold, I'm in East Sussex so escaped the floods thank god!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 12/06/2012 16:23

it is very slow moving isnt it Gloria, and if you look at the position you can see how its going to be a heavy rain maker (bringing rain from the warm wet atlantic up over us)

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 12/06/2012 20:24

I was just looking at the pressure readings going down as it moved closer! I'm guessing that the longer it stays out in the Atlantic, the more rain it accumulates which then has to fall somewhere when it hits land?

GloriaSmud · 12/06/2012 20:27

And I see the metoffice are playing it safe and not issuing any warnings about it yet!

shattereddreams · 12/06/2012 20:32

OYBBK
Being a December, and practically on Christmas birthday, imagine my delight when DS (2) was born mid June.

I organised his birthday party OUTSIDE with a BOUNCY CASTLE this saturday in mid Kent.

What are my chances that the kids can bounce.....

MooncupGoddess · 12/06/2012 20:51

Which options should an ignorant person like me choose to see the basic rainfall/low pressure charts on netweather? I've just had a look and there are so many possibilities it's quite intimidating!

On Friday I am getting the train from London to Exeter and back again for meetings. It doesn't usually take much to screw up the First Great Western timetables so I'm feeling a bit nervous now!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 12/06/2012 22:04

I don't think that's how it works Gloria, but with it hanging round on our shores it will be bringing in rain for a prolonged time.

Shattered! You might just about be ok. :) Early days though.

Have issued tomorrows warning thread.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 13/06/2012 10:15

It doesn't work like that? I'm probably thinking hurricanes then!

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 13/06/2012 13:00

I think that when the air reaches saturation, more moisture input just makes for more rain. Hurricanes are warmth driven and so they can hold more moisture and the more warmthand moisture you add, the bigger they grow!

mumat39 · 13/06/2012 23:42

OYBBK, hope this finds you well. :)

Thanks for the explanation. I just had the wrong stream Confused Mind you my point of reference was Finding Nemo Grin

Thanks again. Thanks I find this topic fascinating. I just hope that some of the areas affected by flooding aren't too badly affected again.

take care

shattereddreams · 14/06/2012 08:00

Thank you OYBBK
I've picked my pecker up in that case...

I use my iPhone forecast and DH uses his HTC phone. They say completely different things!

You're closer to my iPhone
(trumps his HTc again, will show him this after the event!)

shattereddreams · 17/06/2012 08:53

OTBBK
Well done. No rain and they got to bounce.... For a while but the wind was so strong, it blew the castle off the ground Grin

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 17/06/2012 19:51

crikey! that could have been exciting!
