Weaning

Right all you expert weaning parents, how do you open this cup easily?

We've broke the lid a bit so we can open it! Is there a technique as we can never open easily without spilling the contents everywhere!

I do it with my hands on the handles and two thumbs on the lid to push up. It is quite tight.

I open it in the sink - still manage to splash myself though.

It gets chucked about quite a lot so I think the lid needs to be really tight!

I knew it would be that cup! I haven't mastered it after four years.

They are great cups apart from that one minor detail of the lid being welded on Grin I usually resort to my teeth putting the lip bit of the cup in the side of my mouth IYSWIM, but I can get a beer bottle cap off with my teeth so I may just be a freak!!

I do it in the sink and sort of apply downward pressure to the cup by twisting the handle, whilst at the same time lifting the lid with thd thumb if my other hand. Hard to describe but has never failed me yet!

Maybe try running it under the hot tap for a minute?

Always with the spout up so the air can get in.

Boots do a similar one which I find easier to open, but the spout is not as good at not leaking when in a bag. So we use both.

I just try not to put lid on too tight or use the knife I have for butter (fairly blunt) to save my fingers. If that fails I leave for DH to wash up.

So glad I'm not the only one who hates them!

Ha! I knew it would be this cup. There is a knack to it which I have learnt after skinning my knuckles on the bloody thing many times. As plantsitter says, spout open (otherwise it sort of creates a vacuum and is impossible to open), hold the cup firmly with one hand and pull the top off using the sticky out bit (the part you've broken a bit by the looks of it). You'll need to do it over a sink. No-one has ever discovered how to open one without spillage. I do think they loosen up a bit over time, though.

Haha knew it would be this. Working in a nursery...can you imagine having to open about 45 per day?! As the others say, hold over sink, hold the handles and push lid up with thumbs, making sure the spout is up other wise it's almost impossible!

I gave up with these and just use it as a cup as they leak and it doesnt have the twist lid and brought the 7 to 12 month cup with spout for him to use in his own for now x

It's tough to get off but it didn't leak like all the screw on top ones.

I put my palm over lid with fingers over sticky out bit and pull up and towards me holding handles in other hand.

On the MN (cr)App so can't see photos, but is it the Tomee Tippee cup by any chance?

If so - in the sink, hook the sticky outy bit that you'd push with your thumbs on the edge of the plug hole closest to you, hold both handles, apply downward motion to prise the lid off. No splashes, because you have better control over the opening process and all liquid goes directly down the plughole. Smile

This thread has changed my life :)

This is the only cup DS will drink from and every day I wrestle with opening it! Usually I spill water/EBM all over the room/sink/dog!

Since reading the advice above it's been opening like a dream. Hurrah!

Me too! I can now open successfully thanks to all the tips! The packaging should come with the mumsnet instructions!

I saw this thread too late to contribute anything useful, but I too have spent much time cursing and wrestling with these cups. New ones are definitely harder to open. DH pretty much refuses to engage with them. But yesterday I turned my back on 10mo DS, and when I looked back he had somehow got the lid off all by himself Shock.
