7 month baby crying when eating solids

Hello,

My 7 month old DS2 took to weaning brilliantly at 6 months. V keen and happy to try anything. He is having a mixture of mashed up food, purees and finger foods. Over the past few days he has suddenly started sobbing when eating. Real tears and everything- it's horrid! He still seems hungry as he carries on opening his mouth/reaching for food and trying to eat his toast fingers or whatever, but crying at the same time. It happens almost from the very first mouthful, but strangely not at breakfast when he usually has porridge and fruit.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this? Could it be teething (no teeth yet)? Still breastfeeding fine 4x ish a day.

Thanks.

Sounds like teething to me if he's still reaching for food but getting upset when eating it.

Thanks. I thought it could be. I have been blaming things on teething for sometime now. Dribbling, snotty nose, grumpy - it must be the teeth! Surely there will be one sometime soon!

It's teething. Mine did this, so sad. Try giving him some teething gel first to slightly numb the area and I was recommended Nurofen for babies on here to help too. He might be able to eat more comfortably then poor wee thing. Good luck.

I'd also say teething - my DD was doing the same last week! She's 6 months old and has just cut her first tooth. Since the tooth started to poke through a couple of days ago the crying whilst eating has stopped. I'd also recommend using teething gel - really helped with all three of my DCs. Good luck.

Thank you. I actually tried some teething liquid before tea this afternoon and no tears - hurray! Thought I would be better at this second time round and know all the answers - apparently not!

I read somewhere that babies can sometimes bite down on their tongue by accident when they start BLW...could be that? I know my DD has done it a couple of times, suddenly cries out and then reaches for more food.

Hichaechoc - I know what you mean, third time round for me & I still had to google "teething symptoms". You think I'd remember wouldn't you? grin
