I'd like to buy a 2-3 yr old DC a scooter - avoiding blue or pink, so that sibling of opposite sex might use it later. Any suggestions? A plainish red one, for example, would be just the ticket...

How many wheels? If he is ok on just 2 wheels the Cars 2 one is lovely-red, with white, black and grey-maybe boyish though. Or there is a green and blue Toy Story3 one which could suit a boy or girl.

Why can't a girl use a blue one?
Mini micro scooter. Come in all sorts of colours

Good point LordFlash! Or a boy a pink one for that matter.

I think there's more social pressure for a boy not to have a pink one, but there's only one way to change that ;-)
Oh fgs. Well my 3yo wouldn't have used a pink scooter for all the chocolate buttons in the world, despite me trying to be neutral about such things.
I can't vouch for how good this one is, but I love the retro look: Radio Flyer.

Thanks for all the input. Will probably go for a mini micro, though the red radio flyer looks lovely...

Another vote for the mini micro here. I don't know anyone who's regretted buying it. It comes in a few different colours now too.

Oh, and you can buy different coloured parts for it if you wanted to customise it and pass it off as new for a sibling.
