My old moggy was used to coming and going as be pleased. I would prefer him in at night but if nature called he could go out through his cat flap. I'm reading though that pedigrees don't/ shouldn't go out.
Is this correct?

As Itsallgoingtobefine said - as long as it's from a rescue centre it doesn't matter. From a moral point of view you shouldn't be paying anyone to bring more cats into the world (ie a breeder). Hundreds of cats in the UK are put down every day because there aren't enough homes to go round. As you have a home to offer you can make a small difference by taking a homeless cat/kitten. If you buy one you are just encouraging people to add to the already appalling cat overpopulation problem.

I've never owned a pedigree but I think (well, I know) that pedigree cats, like pedigree dogs, in general have more health and temperament issues than moggies, due to how they're bred. Some breeds have specific problems that you can look up before you adopt a pedigree cat, but pedigrees tend to be less healthy in general.

Big house large garden, cat flap, 2 dc under, cat needs to get used to a Cattery for a couple of visits a year. I'm a SAHM so in and out all day. I'm definite going for a BSH silver tabby or grey. Conscience saying rescue... May come home with several!

Have had both- go with moggy. Our bengals were regularly at the vet.

What (broadly) are your home and family circumstances, Chippychop, and what sort of character of cat were you looking for? Those might steer a recommendation.

It depends what you want, if it's certain personality traits you want...I'm told different breeds have different personality traits - with oriental breeds, it's definitely not like owning a moggy, they're the only ones I have personal experience with.

If it's the look of certain breeds you like - some moggies look very much like pedigrees... And of course some are part pedigree.

Al breeds of cat have rescue societies and regularly rehome cats and pedigree cats turn up in rescues, so it's not a choice between rescue cat or pedigree.

I'm totally with issey on this! PLUS i find that black and whites/monochrome cats tend to be the most balanced personality wise as well .. weird, eh? The tortie i took in is a monster, tho we all love her to bits lol

can only vote for moggies here as i have 3 pure moggies and one half siamese, and having worked for a cat rescue for the last 5 years can definitely reccomend rescue cat or kittens as all the rescues in the country are inundated with cats and kittens at the moment due to mild winters kittens are born all year round now not just normal kitten season which will be here in force in a couple of months and demand for places will be higher than ever,

Now I have a pedigree, and am amazed at how smart she is. Most breeders are reputable, and have the health of their queens and kittens in mind when they breed. If you go to a good breeder, who is registered, and even on the committee of the breed, then you shouldn't have any kitten health problems. It's only breeders who sell to petshops that have kitten farms.

Moggies are rather lovely, but I'm happy with our 'fancy lady' cat.

Maybe you need a female cat!

In my hands all pedigrees are arrogant! But then I have only had male BSH. My females have all been moggies and lovely.

As long as it's from a rescue doesn't matter :-) Pedigrees tend to have more genetic problems due to the inbreeding.

That's it really. I've only ever owned moggies... What's the pro's and cons of pedigrees??
