I Bloody Love My Dog I Do

I know there's a similar thread on here already but I am full of love for my dog and felt she deserved her own thread Blush

I took her to the beach today with the 2 DS's.

She is a total star. She chases her ball, but doesn't pester for it if it's in my pocket and she's told to "go play".

She ignores other dogs now totally (unless they come up and nick her ball but in that case I think they deserve to be sworn at).

She ran about joyfully in the mud with the boys (tide was out - cries of "Mummy my wellies are stuck again" abounded) and got absolutely filthy.

She swam in the sea. She swam in the river. She investigated the pill boxes with the boys. She darted around in the bushes/scrubby grass like a loony.

Watching her having such a lovely time gives me almost as much pleasure as watching the boys enjoy themselves (OK, I'm among doggy friends; AS much Blush ).

She is a perfect, obedient, beautifully natured, fun-loving family dog (and occasional Competitive Obedience Dog) and I'm so proud of her. The kids love her, she loves them and I couldn't ask for more Grin

What a lovely post and what a lovely family it sounds like you have. Your dog sounds like a star - what breed is she?

We do chickchick for the same reason Grin Harlech is our absolute favourite there - miles and miles of perfect sandy beach for our dog son to play on. Where do you go?

Grin glad i am not the only one who goes on holiday for my dogs
we love it there too
we go around manobier, saundersfoot and anywhere along that part of the coast. we went to fishguard last year, which was extra driving for us but was lovely.

Took our dog to the beach when we had to go to my folks for a funeral... he's never been to the beach before living where we do - it was hilarious... he put a paw in the blue wet thing, then four of them in... then... the blue wet wobbly thing came chasing after him and he didn't quite know what to make of that one!!!

Still finding sand a month after the event though.

What a lovely thread!
I love my dogs, even though they are embarrassing when they are out and are constantly underfoot!

Notalone - thank you! Yeah, they have their moments Grin She's 7/8 Border Collie and 1/8 Poodle (so I guess half a leg or something). She doesn't look Poodley at all though - more like a brown BC.

Loving Emptyshell's description of her dog's reaction to the big blue wobbly wet thing Grin Boo will only go in if it isn't TOO wobbly. Even with a nice, calm, non-wobbly river she'll only go in if she can ease herself in gradually. She'll never be one of those dogs who dive into the water in an impressive and spectacular way. If she thinks she's going to be straight into deep water from the bank, she watches her stick float by, squeaking anxiously and casting glances at me that are clearly saying "Oh, can't YOU go and get it for me?? Please?"

When it becomes clear I'm NOT going to get it (never have, never will), she pretends she can't see it any more and starts retrieving sticks from the bank and surrounding area - "Was this it??"

Calamity - how old is she? I have been offered a pup and am really weighing up the pros and cons. Your description is exactly what I would like a dog for but I need to be realistic about the tough bits too. I'm wondering what you did in terms of training etc.

Sounds so perfect though Smile

Calamity - Aw she sounds even nicer if possible now seeing as she is a BC x. I also have a BC but he is crossed with a whippet (same as yours - about 7/8 BC and 1/8 whippet) and is ball obsessed, scared of spiders, neurotic, shakes at loud raised voices but doesn't give a shit if they are telling him off, expects the crusts off DS's toast and the last lick of my yoghurt and steals balls from everyone (we realised last year he had been opening the side gate to let himself out so he could pinch them from peoples garages and when on holiday on a campsite on a farm he ran off and came back with the farmers sons ball)He is a rescue and just lovely Smile

chick - Harlech is north west wales near Barmouth. I love where you go though too - its such a lovely part of Wales around Pembrokeshire. We love Barafundle Bay and Broadhaven South near there but haven't been in a few years. We went to Saundersfoot once and ended up on a lovely beach in the rain that had a weird tunnel next to it. It had a pub that we stopped off at for a pint that was the weirdish place ever and like being sat in someones lounge Smile. I want to go back there now I am talking about it!

petitdonkey - she's 3 now.

Don't get me wrong - it hasn't been all plain sailing.

She was a NIGHTMARE to housetrain, despite me doing everything right. I suspect that the reason for that is that her living conditions as a puppy weren't exactly what you'd call... spotless. We got there in the end though.

She spent a lot of time being obsessed with other dogs - I had to work very hard to MAKE her interested in her ball/tuggie, and because she isn't particularly food-orientated she is rarely fed from a bowl - she gets all her kibble during training sessions.

I do a lot with her, training-wise, but that's what I got her for. I wanted a dog I could compete at Obedience with, I love teaching tricks and I don't view training as a chore - I really enjoy it.

So yeah, she's wonderful and exactly what I always wanted, but that didn't come automatically. When you do get there though, and have days like I described above, it's all absolutely worth it Grin

Thanks Calamity - I keep talking to different people and now I'm in a muddle!! Some people say 'absolutely, it will be the best thing you'll ever do', others just tell me what hard work it is.

My main problems are that DH really doesn't want to be involved with a dog - he doesn't mind if I get one but he would rather not!

Our youngest DC is just two and suddenly life is SO much easier - should I just enjoy that feeling for a while??

I need to decide by Friday for this particular puppy....

cheap is £79 for five nights for 3 bed, two baths static caravan inc elec and gas. very clean. quiet site. mile from beach
£200 for mid august sounds great too. is that pp though? if its for accommodation and not pp could you pm me details?
we avoid saundersfoot in summer as prices are very very high. spring and autumn prices are reasonable
we got same sort of caravan as above in fishguard for £187 for week in august last year. we enjoyed it so much, and met some lovely local dog people, we plan to go again

Aww she sounds lovely.

I love my dog aswell a couple of weeks ago I forgot to close the stairgate at the top of the stairs, was busy pottering about the bedrooms whilst DD (14 months) was toddling about. I heard her screaming in anger and ran out of bedroom to find her beating the dog around the head Blush and trying her hardest to get past the dog whilst the dog stopped her from stepping near the stairs, everytime DD moved, the dog did.
