What to wear to a marriage blessing

I've just realised that my big bro's wedding is less than two weeks away and I haven't decided what to wear. It's a second marriage so its a church blessing followed by reception - they're over 60 so I think essentially a
meal and time to chat to people rather than anything wild .

Not sure what's appropriate to wear for this occasion and time of year - when I got the invitation I was thinking it would be summer frock weather but today has given me second thoughts.

Any thoughts please? I'm 5'1", size 10 pear type, hate heels.

Perhaps I should repost this under the Weddings topic?

Same as you would wear to a wedding.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/04/2015 15:20

Yes, exactly what you would wear to a wedding.

Am I sensing a slight lack of engagement with the appropriate wedding excitement?

Summer dress with a rather grand coat? Are you planning to buy something or shopping from your wardrobe?

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2015 16:05

TBH, you're right, I'm probably not quite in the right mood for it yet, I've got to go alone because DD's GCSEs start the week after and it's several hours drive.

Yes, exactly what you would wear to a wedding.

I don't think I've been to a wedding in early May....either high summer or mid-winter in the past. That's whats thrown me, I was thinking I'd wear what I wore to the last one I went to (sans hat, it got squashed), but it's far too summery.

Just been reviewing my dresses, there's one I love which might fit the bill if I could find a jacket and shoes that would go with it. Its quite bright floral on a black ground (though very little black) cotton jersey with a full mid-calf skirt, short sleeves and scoop neck. Comfortable to wear, adaptable to changeable weather, but looks quite celebratory I think.

So - I'm guessing you wouldn't be excited enough for this?

Pantsalive · 29/04/2015 16:53

Could you get a jacket in one of the colours of the pattern? Something like this? And perhaps a pair of coordinating shoes or nude with a low heel (and then you could wear tights to keep warm).

ErrolTheDragon · 29/04/2015 18:18

How have I lived this long without knowing about that minuet and other petites site before? ConfusedGrin I'll take a look, though TBH think I've left it a bit late to get anything online as not sure how the sizing of those brands goes. But bookmarked for future reference!

zero - I don't think I would want to spend that much on any item of clothing, ever! The New Look jackets are quite possibly more what I need to get - though I'd be happy to spend a bit more than that on a good jacket.

Thanks thanks all!

The local debenhams does précis but not minuet. But I looked on the store finder and there is a dept store not too far away that does which may come in handy sometime.

Hi Errol. I've jumped over from the 5:2 thread. kaliko have some nice dresses.not sure why buy I always get promo emails so if you see something pm me first to check if I have a discount code. I think they have some warmer dresses still but understand you may be better spending money on a jacket to go with your existing dress.
Shame you have to go on your own. sounds like it's a busy time for you. I'm sure you'll look fab whatever you choose.
post links of possibles if you can!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2015 16:52

Thanks... some of those dresses are lovely. But I think I really need to find a jacket (whether or not I get a new dress too) and shoes.

Please, please look for a summery coat rather than a jacket. A short jacket over a full, mid-calf dress runs the risk (imvho) of looking very square/ unadventurous. You want to look flighty - for when the dancing on the tables starts.

I think that's unintentionally persuaded me to definitely get a jacket. Grin The last time I wore a proper coat was to a wedding - about 25 years ago! Just not my thing I'm afraid.
