Just wear it - the natural oils in your skin will bring it up a treat. It's amazing how quickly it looks a hundred times better.

Soak it in diet coke. Sounds odd but does wonders
Rub toothpaste on it - it really works.

Line a Tupperware box with foil and put in some soda crystals (the old fashioned kind you get at the obscure end of the washing powder aisle). Put your silver jewellery in and fill with boiling water. It will fizz entertainingly and all the black grime will transfer itself to the foil. You can scrub with an old toothbrush while it's in there if it's really bad but you probably won't need to. It comes up nice and shiny.
Thank you so much for all the tips
Appreciate it - will give them a whirl
It's just tarnished. It's an oxidisation of the metal.
In the jewellery trade we use selvet cloths for this. (It's a cloth trated with polish and one will last you a life time.)
cloth
Cheap and just throw it in a drawer till next time.

I have an anti-tarnish jewellery cabinet that doubles as a full length mirror. Got if from qvc and it was expensive - about £110 when I bought it - but they make trinket boxes for £13 too. It has a special lining that stops oxidisation from happening. The range at qvc is called lori greiner anti tarnish (stick it in the search box) but I'm sure there must be other products out there that do the same job.
Thank you Mrs C and Mrs M
