No sign of an Olympics thread, other than for the nay-sayers as far as I can see. Who has their game-face on?

So there's lots of obstacles to staging the events BUT we really shouldn't be letting them prevent a celebration of commitment and dedication to sporting excellence over years.
London 2012 was fantastic obv, and the opening ceremony last night was very un-London but just as fascinating in a global theme of sustainability and re-cycling.

And speaking of re-cycling......1.30pm sees the start of the bike mens road race. Six hours in the saddle. Womens road race is tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Pan just marking place. Is the track cycling going to be here or in the cycling thread?

Cycling thread do we think? It's a small part of the bigger thing and we may find it hard to find each other in the crowds that this thread will obv attract. Smile

12 gold medals up for grabs today - archery, rowing, fencing, equestrians all going on.

Remember the observation from 2012 that GB were good at cycling, equestrian, rowing. The events that involved sitting down. Smile

Oh I loved 2012 Olympics, really looking forward to these too. I like most of the event and usually get really interested in sports I wouldn't expect to like.

Managed to fit in a bit of rugby 7s, rowing, equestrian, judo, boxing and right now beach volleyball as well as the obligatory cycling so far. I love the Olympics. Should be packing to go on holiday but it will be fiiiine, as long as we have cossies and some t-shirts and shorts all will be well. Plus massive bike box containing carbon fibre beauty which I'm terrified will break somehow. Nearly forgot the saddle which would have been a bit embarrassing.

Currently impressing the teens with my knowledge of hand signals in beach volleyball.

Where are the spectators? Venues are empty but there aren't many on the road race course either!

The beach volleyball filled up pretty quickly. Not sure about the road race. There are quite a few at the tops and on the flats below. Not sure though that Brazil has a keen pro-biking culture.

I was wondering that, none of the events (we've added swimming and hockey to our list now) look very full.

Heading off down France Pan, need some vin rouge, fromage and fields full of sunflowers Grin. DS1 refused to come unless his bike could come too and has lovingly Strava'd some routes for all the different places we'll be.

Kind of gutted it's booked during the Olympics though, I really can't stay indoors all day watching TV if I'm supposed to be on holiday, terrible planning!
