We've been asked by giveasyoulive.com to help them get some feedback on their website. They want to know what you think of the site's concept and whether you think you'd use it in the future.

Here's what Give as you Live say about their site: "Thousands of leading brands will donate to the charity of your choice when you shop with Give as you Live. Connected to all 220,000 UK registered charities, Give as you Live enables you to raise funds for any charity every time you shop online, without paying anything extra. For example, predicted to be the bestselling gift this Christmas, every iPad2 sold can raise almost £6 for a shopper's favourite charity through Give as you Live. You can also download Give as you Live and shop directly at thousands of stores like Tesco, Hamley's, and John Lewis and raise money for the charity of your choice. An average shopper can raise at least £75 for the charity of their choice through what they spend online."

They're offering a £500 donation to the charity of your choice if you add your comments to this thread - before you add your views please visit Give as you Live's page on Mumsnet here or go to giveasyoulive.com and have a look around to see what it's all about. On the site you can browse, do some shopping with over 1600 retailers or create a wish list - this could be for your DCs, your DP/DH, other family and friends, or yourself. You can then share your wish list with friends and/or family members if you want to but there's no obligation to do so.

When people buy via your wish list, Give as you Live give a percentage of the money paid to the charity you have nominated. Or you can use the links on the site to generate donations for your nominated charity when you buy online. For example, if you bought a pair of UGG boots for £135, £3.38 would be donated to a charity of your choice, be it your children's school or a national charity.

Once you've had a look around the site please come back to this thread and add your feedback on what you think of the site's concept and the site itself. There are some feedback questions below to start you off but please feel free to add any other comments too.

~ What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?
~ Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
~ Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
~ Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
~ Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?
~ Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?
~ If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?

Please note: Your personal details will be secure and will not be passed on to any third parties. If you do decide to buy anything, you won't need to give Give as you Live your bank or credit card details - payment is done via the retailer you purchase from. If you register with Give as you Live but then decide you want to de-register, you can do so by emailing [email protected].

Everyone who takes part and adds their feedback to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get £500 donated to a charity of their choice (from the list of supported charities on the website). Please note that Give as you Live will not make any commission on the £500 donation that the prize draw winner makes.

Thanks very much

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?

It's a great idea. I've used QUIDCO in the past to raise money collectively through cashback shopping for schools so I know the concept works.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
No, as mentioned I use cashback sites in a similar manner.

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
Local school charities, childrens' hospices and cancer research.

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
I think there is something slightly irksome about thinking you are giving to charity by shopping. It feels a bit wrong somehow but that may just be me. Surely if we bought less stuff and just gave some money to charity that would be better? Confused

Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?

John Lewis, The White Company - basically brands which are a bit more expensive so you actually get a worthwhile donation out of it.

Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not? I think my parents would find it confusing (I know they would actually), and I don't think DH could be bothered. He likes his charity giving to be done by direct debit.

If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity? I had a go but it didn't work for me (Mac user).

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?
I think it sort of takes the 'doing' out of it. The thinking about it, and making an effort to support the causes you beleive in. It is quite lazy 'yeah I will help a charity, as long as I don't actually have to 'do' anything to help them. I am happy for another organisation to give the charities some of 'their' money if I shop with them'

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
No I probably won't. I am more likely to raise money for charity and donate in that manner.

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
St Lukes Hospice Plymouth, McMillan Nurses, Marie Curie, Cancer Research

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
Not sure, would need to think about it a bit more

Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?
All retailers. I would not pick and chose my retailers based on whether they would use this site or not.

Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?
As Chocolate said, it is confusing to many people. DH would rather just bung a couple quid in a bucket every so often, and I would prefer to give my time to raise the money and think about my input more.

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?
It's a good concept as it's easy and would probably become a habit once you got use to using the system.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
No, I donate to charities in other ways and like to buy in shops rather than online where I can.

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
Local charities, hospices, local schools.

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
Maybe adding a facility to round up to the next pound and donate the difference to the charity.

Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?
I shop in loads of different places and am not a creature of shopping habit so as long as there is a wide range of retailers and I could find what I was looking for it would be fine.

Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, giving to charity is a very personal thing- not something I feel comfortable discussing with others.

If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?
I didn't download it.

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?
Good idea, I'm a trustee for a local charity and this would really add up if a good chunk of our volunteers used this for their Christmas shopping.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
Yes, but probably only because I have a personal stake in this one charity and really want it to succeed!

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
Local charities, hospices. Ones where a small sum still makes a real difference.

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
Not sure. I really like it like it is now.

Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?
ASOS maybe? ASOS and Amazon are my main online shopping sites.

Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definitely, going to tell everyone at the charity on Monday. Will probably put it in my facebook status.

If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?
Didn't download it. Would prefer just to do it through the website, also uneasy about something on my computer tracking what you buy.

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?
It is a really great idea. So easy and simple.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
No, I already use a different click and donate site.

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
Local preschool

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
Adding a way to donate to the charity direct. At this time of year, linking to charity gift sites or things like Refuge's John Lewis gift list.

Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?
You have a good range.

Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?
No, I already recommend a different site. It wouldn't be possible to recommend two places that do the same thing - too confusing.

If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?
I didn't download it.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future? No probably not. I give directly in time and money to causes close to my heart

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live? Hospice care

Not unless they can get competitive pricing

~ Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?

UKAMB (milk banking)

~ Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?

The prices need to be more competitive! I would definitely like to buy everything through a single site that would deduct to charity, but Im not going to do it if they are already over priced by around 10% (on the products I looked up).
You should be able to search charities without signing up. The search itself was not very well done.

~ Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?

I like to see the whole thing hook up through amazon or someone like it. Amazon could just have a check box saying add on 1% to everything I buy and send it to charity X.

I wouldnt because of the reasons above.

*~ What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?

It's brilliant.

~ Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?

Yes, especially if I can work my way round the cookies which insist on trying to donate to a charity which doesn't exist anymore - no matter how many times I've tried to change it, it always reverts.

~ Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?

Did do the DCs old school, and always used Everyclick as a search engine - I was staggered by how much money it was possible to raise without actually doing anything.

Now support Unicef.

~ Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?

I'm sure the shops would never agree, but a button on eg John Lewis / Amazon website to remind/re-direct would be great.

~ Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?

All the biggies are covered I think.

~ Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Definitely. I did a campaign at the DCs old school to get people to use Everyclick, and if I was still there, would do the same with Give as You Live. Keeping people on it though was harder. Most people tried/remembered a few times, but then fell away.

~ If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity? *

I was lovely seeing the running total, but honestly, remembering to do it, like remembering to claim student discount often falls by the wayside.

I think it is a good idea but I am always worried by sites that need you to download something. I found the website a little confusing at first and probably would have clicked back off the site if I wasn't checking it out for Mumsnet. Once I looked around I was impressed with the amount of stores taking part.

I like the concept, but in practice I wouldn't remember to use it (I'm involved with a charity which gets commission from Amazon if you click through from the charity website, and I forget that every time).

The download thing would seem like a good idea, but I don't like the spying aspect personally. Not sure that I would necessarily recommend it because of that.

But anything which increases donations to charity (particularly the smaller ones) is a good thing.

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?
It?s not a bad concept; it does take the thought out of giving to charity, but that works really well for the charities and people would be more inclined to use this system as it doesn?t actually cost them anything.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
Possibly, but I am loathe to download apps onto my pc for security reasons and my DH absolutely hates to download apps like this again for security reasons.

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?
RNLI; I already donate to them directly but I would be more than happy to help them get a little more by doing my shopping online (which I do anyway, my shopping online that is!).

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?
No, not really, it?s a good idea. I would however like to be able to look through a list of the charities that could benefit from me using the system as not knowing if my preferred charities would be able to benefit would put me off signing up. They can provide a list of stores I can use but not a list of the charities Confused
I would also prefer they didn't push the software so much.

Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?
Bravissimo, Figleaves, Go Outdoors, DW Sports, Hotel Chocolat.
I would prefer not to see gambling sites on there though.

Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I?m not sure, if we were having a conversation about something like this I would probably mention Give as you Live, but I know those family that might be interested tend to prefer giving directly. Friends; a few of my more philanthropic friends might well be interested and I would at least mention this system.

If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?
I didn?t, there aren?t enough assurances for my data safety and integrity for me to download an app such as this to my pc.

What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more? Yes, like it, good to have an alternative to "easyfundraising.com" which is more for local charities, whereas this is more large charities.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?
No, I'll continue to give to my local charity direct.

I dislike this: " Give as you Live donates up to 90% of all commissions generated.".

So its taking at least 10% of the profits. Selling itself as a charitable cause but actually turning a profit? I accept that there are some overheads to a website like this, but it smacks of "chugging" to me.

In the FAQ, it says:
100% of the funds you raised are passed on to charity.

But then
Usually, the portion Everyclick retains is a variable percentage based on how much a cause is able to raise. Each cause will receive the following commission rates, based on their overall total raised:

Up to £500,000 - the cause will receive 50% of all commissions
From £500,001 - to £999,999 the cause will receive 75% of all commissions
From £1m to £1,999,999 - the cause will receive 85% of all commissions
From £2m+ - the cause will receive 90% of all commissions

Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live? None of these are charities I routinely support. SOme of them are illegible on the main site and I do not wish to log in to see if there are any others.

Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?

Be clearer about the money and how it is allocated to charities. It is possible that they could only get 50% of the rebate. Its misleading to say that they will get the money.

I like the concept. It's a great idea.

Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?

To be honest no probably not. Only because I prefer to use cashback sites like Quidco where I get the instant benefit of the cash return for online shopping. If I want to donate to charity I will choose to do so on my own terms be it sponsoring a friend etc

I would prefer to sponsor a local charity or an environmental charity like Woman's Environmental Network or Go Real

I don't think it needs improving. It's just I wouldn't personally use it.

I thought it was a great idea and its fab that can donate to charity at no extra cost when you buy something through the site. Didnt like how you had to download software, maybe they could change this, which in my eyes would improve the service. I would definately recommend it to friends, but not sure if they would use it. Personally I would donate direct to a chosen charity instead of using the website. I didnt download the software, as was worried about the security and my personal details, bank detail, etc. I would definately donate to the nsppc if I did use the site.

Yes. I think my family would be interested.
~ If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?
I didn't download it. I think I'd feel more comfortable going via the website.

I like the idea of using the site when looking to buy a gift nd getting inspiration from the range of stores available if I don't already know hat I'm getting.
At the moment I go via nectar for a lot of my online shopping to collect nectar points. I would definitely use this site for shops not connected to nectar. For sites I can access via both I might find it difficult to give up the nectar points (they're paying for Christmas).

  • What do you think of the concept of raising money for charity while you shop without having to spend any more?

Great idea, although I already use cashback sites. Would be more likely to use these and then donate from my income rather than use this site in particular.

~ Do you think you'll use Give as you Live in future?

As above, although I was really pleased to see Amazon was there. I shop at Amazon frequently so am likely to sign up for these purchases as I don't get 'normal' cashback elsewhere.

~ Which charity/charities do you think you would choose to support if you shopped on Give as you Live?

Education charities.

~ Do you think the idea behind the site could be improved in any way? If so, how?

Donate more.

~ Are there any other retailers you'd like to see on the site?

A reasonable range there but the more the merrier!

~ Do you think you would recommend Give as you Live to any of your friends and/or family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'd mention it but most of my friends already donate to charities and use other cashback sites.

~ If you downloaded Give as you Live, how did you get on with shopping directly at your favourite stores and raising money for charity?

Have not downloaded yet.

It's a good idea in theory and DCs school tries to encourage parents to use the Giving Machine which seems similar. The problem is that whilst I agree with altruism in theory and in times of plenty, in this time of austerity I cannot believe that many people will use one of these portals when they could be using another portal which would enable them to reap Nectar Points (or another type of loyalty card points) or cashback for themselves.

I woudl possibly give if I was feeling flush but we most certainly aren't at the moment. Every penny counts!

Hate to say it but would probably support DCs school which now has a charity registered PTA

What about the idea of rounding up one's payment to nearest £ as an option to give a little?

I quite liked the range of retailers - definitely ones we use!

I would flag it up but as I've said most people unless really money are rather struck for cash at the moment. I have found the problem with the one recommended by DCs school is that I just forget to use it when I am shopping online (when I am feeling generous)
