5 week old confused with day and night!

My gorgeous 5 week old ds is a fantastic sleeper...however the poor little mite has day and night confused!

He suffers from reflux, so the screaming and wriggling seems to tire him out during the day. Today he has napped on and off for over 8.5 hours. Shock

He normally goes to bed about 7 and will have a 2.5 hour sleep and then is up at least 5 or 6 times throughout the night and is wide awake. His reflux is worse at night too.

I have tried to keep him awake more throughout the day but regardless of what I do he either just falls asleep or gets so overtired he screams (and them falls to sleep!)

Is there anything I should be doing to encourage him to sleep more at night, is this just a phase? My dd never slept as a baby so having one the does is all new to me Grin

Just to complicate things further we are relocating back to Europe at the end of this month so we have to deal with a 4 hour time difference.

Any advice would be most welcome.

(just to add, he was three weeks early if that makes any difference?)

Leave him be in the day. Babies sleep a lot in the day - more than you remember if you've had one already!

With DD (she's my second), I got her up at the same time each day and put her down at the same time each night which seemed to sort her out quite quickly (unlike DS - but I didn't know what I was doing).

Just keep him out and about in the day etc and keep nights dull. Also is his reflux being treated?

Perfectly normal I'm afraid - babies take a few months to set their circadian rhythm Smile

Thanks for replying.

My delightful dd wouldn't let him sleep any longer in the mornings, she isn't the quietest of children Grin we are all awake way too early at 6.30 ish so at least that is consistent. We do try to get him down in his cot around 7, the same time as his sister. I will keep sticking to this.

We have another appointment tomorrow re his reflux, we are just giving him drops at the moment, keeping him upright after a feed and elevated when sleeping.

He seems to sleep even more if we are out and about. He loves the car and his pram Hmm

Hey barbie

Have you tried holding DS in the 'sleeping tiger' hold after feeding? You lay him across your forearm with his head face down at your elbow. and your hand cupping his bum. It really soothed both of mine who had reflux to varying degrees..

The only advice I would give re: night and day is not to let him sleep more than 3 hours during the day lest he wakes during the night to make up for lost milk. but he is still so very young and tiny I would just let hm rule the the roost for now Smile

Enjoy these 'curled up like a comma' weeks, they go so quickly...
