My nails were wrecked last year, any tips?

I'm off to France in two weeks, last year my fingernails were wrecked for months afterwards, first they were really flaky, then a horizontal ridge had to grow out. I wore good gloves last year and my hands were never cold, but I am hoping to avoid the problem. Has anyone else had it?
I've bought silk liner gloves this year and am planning liberal slathering of cream at night, I've just started wondering about gel nails, do they help strengthen? Is it worth having a manicure? Presumably they'd offer some protection, it is particularly cold over there at the mo.

Don't do the gellac nails before skiing. I did last year and my nails were in a shocking state when the stuff was finally removed.

Slather on either very rich hand cream (the L'Occitane ones are excellent) or liberal application of sweet almond oil before bed.

I think having a manicure is always worthwhile wink
