Could we just lay one thing to rest once and for all? The next thing will never ever be tickers grin.

Other forums I use only count people as online if they were active in the last 5 minutes so it wouldn't count if you just had the page open.

LOL at cross-post with TigerFeet.

And where's my tenner, StG?

if I want a certain person then I ring them/email them/text them.....or sit on here is a <<sulk>> cos I have no contact for them bar here.

I agree with StG and WWB. MN works so well because it's not like other sites.

Next thing you know we'll be getting tickers...

It'll be tickers before you know it

<<shudder>>

I don't have an issue with a "number of users online" feature - it won't detract from my MN experience (lol at that phrase - MN experience) but I don't think it would add to it either.

I think there would be uproar if there was a list of who was online - can you imagine the more needy paranoid sociable amongst us getting upset if someone they liked was online but was ignoring a thread they had started.

I like how easy it is to be anonymous on this site when you want to be.

I was going to post pretty much what StG has. Agree wholeheartedly with everything she said.

Hate the idea, sorry.

Hate the idea of seeing exactly who is online even more.

It is irrelevant half the time anyway. Loads of people leave MN open all day, doesn't mean they are actually sat in front of the screen actively participating.

MN was once unique amongst forums. It now seems to be slowly morphing into a copy of all the rest. Such a shame.

Would be nice to see some statistics

Most users online

How many users currently online

How many users registered

Not fussed about names tho..

I would like a counter, then when I'm posting late at night I can see if I'm talking to myself.

Don't like the idea of everyone named when online. It would be like facebook. Sometimes you don't want everyone knowing you are online.

"would it add something to your mumsnet experience? "

um... not that I can think of.

We can certainly look into this - what do others feel about a counter - would it add something to your mumsnet experience?

I think that is a fab idea

I've seen some websites where you can actually see who is on line, their names are at the bottom of the screen.

Do those counter things register how many people actually have the site open or how many people are logged in. Cos they're different aren't they? Just curious...
Contact the poster See this person's profile Contact mumsnet about this post By EachPeachPearMum on Wed 08-Oct-08 22:24:40
I would love a 'counter' too, of how many are logged in. I'm sure the new servers would be able to handle it!

He has also asked if we can have a new abbreviation in his honour DSB (dip shit boyfriend). grin

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
For a wink, , type [wink]
For a shocked face, , type [shock]
For an angry face, , type [angry]
For an embarrassed face, , type [blush]
For a sad face, , type [sad] or :(
For an envious face, , type [envy]
For a sceptical face, , type [hmm]

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
