SaintG is right. Not only that but we'll get (pointless) emails from people saying "Why has my post got a 'this has been reported' icon on it?".

Keep the ideas coming and if you can come up with something that really does work for everyone we'll definitely think about implementing it.

StG has a point.

the ""80's disco and klaxons blaring in the corner, 'shit, I'd better check it out!'"" point especially made me giggle

that could alert people to teh troll who may not have noticed

i like soupy's idea though, the icon especially is brilliant grin

I think the multiple reporting does draw attention to the problem a little quicker at MNHQ though Soupy.

The light flashes red once, they think 'meh, maybe I'll check after my coffee break'

It flashes twice, 'meh, I need the loo first before I check'

80's disco and klaxons blaring in the corner, 'shit, I'd better check it out!'

LOL soupy, we so need that as an emoticon.

oh, maybe that can come up as soon as we press 'report' on a suspect troll???

or, we need it set as an emoticon, as code-word for trollwink

Perhaps a reported post could have a "this has been reported" icon so people know it's been reported and, er, not report it again. and again. And maybe again.

oh, and there was me thinking you were wonderful and all!!!

you shatter all my allusions<<sigh>>

wink

tis a shame we cannot have something more than the 'report' button tho, saves many of us getting upset with it all then and then suffering the fall-out for days after.

thankyou for responding tho

I like the notion that this is something that we could just slip in this afternoon!

We will have a think about this, but it's a bit more complicated than it might appear. For one thing, one person's troll is another person's whatever-the-opposite-is. Or perhaps not the opposite, but different people do draw the line of what is trolling and what isn't in different places. From there it's a slippery slope to user ratings, post rankings, karma points and so on.

For now the Report this post is really the only viable option, but we are open to further suggestions.

well......I know you are about, is this a good idea or not???

Contact the poster Contact mumsnet about this post By InvisiblePsychomum on Fri 03-Oct-08 13:45:54
along with those couple extra thingies you say you are implementing on MN this afternoon, any way of putting a 'troll alert' oojamewhatsit around certain threads once it is obvious what they are, so people know to ignore and so 'send troll to coventry'.

????

just a thought is all seeing as we seem to be on a troll-attracting-week right now.

Emphasis: To bold a word, surround it with asterisks, so *hello* will display hello. For underline use _ , so _hello_ gives hello. For italics use ^, so ^hello^ gives hello. To strike out a word, surround it with two hyphens either side, so --dog-- gives dog

Links and smileys: To insert a smiley face, , type [smile] or :)
For a big grin, , type [grin] or :o
For a wink, , type [wink]
For a shocked face, , type [shock]
For an angry face, , type [angry]
For an embarrassed face, , type [blush]
For a sad face, , type [sad] or :(
For an envious face, , type [envy]
For a sceptical face, , type [hmm]

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
