Hiya HQ

what attention, if any, do you pay to the content of advertising on the site?

I'm asking because there have been a few ads recently (IKEA and that DaiY 'Big Nag' one) which I think have a really reductionist attitude to women. I know they're national campaigns, I know that the revenue is very important but I also think MN might be big enough to influence the content of campaigns. I might be wrong.

So does it matter to you? Is it something you consider? Should it be?

Not seen the DIY one but I did nearly post about the Ikea one. The stupid TV ad irritated me and was surprised to then see it here.

jenny60 · 20/04/2011 20:43

Agreed: that Ikea one is just plain insulting.

nethunsreject · 20/04/2011 20:47

Piss me off too.

But no doubt this will go the way of MacDonalds. There'll be several dozen posters along shortly saying the following:

  1. Oh fgs, your heads are up your arses. Stop taking it seriously.
  1. Advertising pays for MN. Would you rather subscribe. (yes, I would).
Unrulysun · 20/04/2011 22:04

See I know that advertising pays for stuff and that's ok. I am thinking that Mumsnet is big enough to say to its advertisers 'interesting copy but we'd prefer not to insult our target audience everytime it logs on - how about a nice picture of a puppy instead?' or something more about 'demographics' and 'market penetration and technical shit like that. :)

I haven't seen the Ikea one but the DIY one really, really pisses me off. Women nag? Men do DIY? Oh FGS spare me. You'll be telling me to be grateful to my husband for babysitting his children next. Hmm

And another thing! This forum really, really needs an eye rolling smiley :o

I did see the thread but weirdly not the ad, how peculiar.

nethunsreject - yes I think you're probably right

Tee2072 · 21/04/2011 06:32

I don't see ads because I use adblock, but reading about this one did make me wonder why MacDonalds is evil but sexism is okay. Hmm

jenny60 · 21/04/2011 09:23

tee: please tell me about adblock.

Tee2072 · 21/04/2011 09:27

Jenny go here: adblockplus.org/en/. It's free, easy to use and blocks all ads. It's for Firefox.

Chrysanthemum5 · 21/04/2011 09:36

I pay absolutely no attention to the adverts so I've never even noticed any adverts on this site (I guess I'm not much use to the advertisers!). However, I've seen the Ikea one on TV and it is really annoying. I understand that advertising helps keep the site going, but surely mumsnet is big enough, and with an audience that advertisers appear to want to reach, that MNHQ could refuse adverts that insult people (women or men)

jenny60 · 21/04/2011 09:48

Thanks so much tee, especially as I've just seen the nagging ad. Shock
Is this reall where we are in 2011?

yama · 21/04/2011 09:54

I have taken to muting tv adverts so that my dc are not so affected by them.

Agree that Mumsnet should not run Ikea adverts. Don't know what the DaiY 'Big Nag' one is.

Hello all,
We don't pre-vet ads but will most certainly pass this thread on to the relevant ad agencies so they can reflect your views to their clients - will let you know what they say. Thanks for the feedback.
