Does your child's school use a system that allows parents to see what their homework is?

And if so, what system do they use?

Yes, Go4Schools.

I can see homework, grades, timetables, attendance and behaviour info. We also get the reports via the app when they're available.

RedskyToNight · 17/11/2019 11:17

Sort of. They use a system called Firefly.
however, not all teachers put homework on there all the time, and sometimes the homework description will say something like "finish the worksheet handed out in class" so you don't actually know what it is, iyswim.

As per PP we can also see behaviour/achievement points, timetables and reports.

lovethecrown · 17/11/2019 11:19

Yes firefly at both my dc's (different) schools. It has everything on it in AlexaShutup's post plus curriculum, gcse/a level question and answer banks, Mfl practice stuff, school calendar etc.

TeenPlusTwenties · 17/11/2019 11:25

Yes. They use google classroom and are just introducing something from/called 'RealSmart' which will show other info. However as it is currently rejecting my attempts to register I'm not sure what that has.

Lougle · 17/11/2019 11:29

DD2's school uses Google Classroom for homework and SIMS parent for timetable, conduct, reports, etc.

Classroom has two modes - student and guardian. The guardian registration just gives a summary of the homework set. Student shows the work and any attachments, etc. Most parents I have spoken to simply use their child's student login so they can see everything.

peanutbear · 17/11/2019 11:37

My children's school use show my homework. It has a parents and student view so you can see if it has been checked off by them as done and completed.

fortyfifty · 17/11/2019 11:41

That's interesting. DD's school use google classroom but we've not been given a guardian option. A summary is all I would need. Just something to help keep track of what nights are what homework. I can log in to her account if I need to see specifics although even then I am not sure her school has configured it well for the students.

DD's school use nothing for homework but do use SIMS for attendance and reports.
DS's school use Show My Homework and Go for Schools.
Both approaches work OK

Doggyfeet · 17/11/2019 11:44

My DDs school use Go4schools but haven’t bought into the homework option - I can see attendance, reports, etc.

DSs school uses classcharts which has attendance, behaviour and homework listed. Without it I would really struggle to keep track of him homework (he has SEN and really poor handwriting).

XelaM · 17/11/2019 11:48

My daughter's school uses ShowMyHomework. But I can only see homework. It doesn't show reports or anything else.

Lougle · 17/11/2019 11:49

I've chosen to have a daily summary, so I get this. If I'm logged in as my daughter, I can also message the teacher, as attachments, and submit the homework. As guardian I only get this summary. I could choose to have it weekly instead.

BlackSwanGreen · 17/11/2019 11:51

Yes, my DC have SIMS which shows homework, attendance, behaviour, events etc.

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2019 11:54

ClassCharts. We can see the homework that has been set, behaviour/merit points and attendance. On DS’s version, he can mark if he has submitted his homework.

Cohle · 17/11/2019 12:26

Nope, just an old fashioned paper homework diary. It seems to work well. Absent SEN of course, I would have thought it was a good thing for kids to take responsibility for managing their own time and work.

TeenPlusTwenties · 17/11/2019 12:29

Um yes. Actually OP, I just log into DD's google classroom account...

champagneandfromage50 · 17/11/2019 12:31

Firefly over here and parents have there own login. However on there homework planner diary there is a weekly timetable and also what homework they will be set each day. Makes it easy

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 17/11/2019 12:33

Yes, schoology, although I believe they are planning to move over to a different system this year. Works well: there is a parent log in which just shows homework and a student log in that also has facility to message teacher/shared chat spaces eg for those in the musical/messages to all year group etc.

Fraught1 · 17/11/2019 12:38

My children's school uses the Go4school site. I think it is pretty good, everything is updated in real time and I can see homework, attendance, behaviour record etc.

Woopdewoop · 17/11/2019 12:39

Yes Go4schools. Really helpful can see homework set, completed and pending. Helps me to help them stay on top

Hersetta427 · 17/11/2019 12:40

My daughter's school used firefly. She has a login and I have one as well. I can see homework assigned plus and behaviour marks or merit marks.

notnowmaybelater · 17/11/2019 12:42

Bloody hell I'm glad I'm not teaching any more.

I have no involvement in my secondary school children's homework beyond asking them whether they've done it and testing them on their MFL vocabulary or anything else they have an upcoming test on and ask me to test them on.

This is the payoff for primary being a stressful time during which children of 6-10 are expected to take complete responsibility except when they're struggling when parents get sent a rude letter in which they are told off and instructed to ensure their child's homework is complete, neat, on time, that they haven't done the wrong page in the text book (dc3's main offence aside from not writing all of the homework down at all is not writing the page number down but thinking he remembers, or not writing which number is the page and which the task number so doing task 6 on page 7 instead of task 7 on page 6...) but the teachers don't see ensuring that the children all actually know what the homework is and what books they need as their responsibility...

It's a bit survival of the fittest and my 8 year old is really struggling atm.

I see why this is very nice to have at primary or if your child has SEN or other difficulties, but am surprised it's become a normal thing at secondary, how on earth do teachers have time to actually plan interesting, differentiated lessons and teach and mark with all the admin on top?

For children with no special challenges isn't it a bit infantalising too? No need to take any responsibility until 16+ seems a bit counterproductive...

CMOTDibbler · 17/11/2019 12:44

Yes, Epraise and the teachers always seem to attach worksheets or other resources to the item.

LolaSmiles · 17/11/2019 12:45

Many schools I've worked in have used ClassCharts or Show My Homework.

It's always worth remembering that the instructions are for the students, not parents so things like "complete the homework sheet given in class" is totally acceptable. If they aren't in class they have to get caught up.

They're useful platforms but I'll be honest I find it another level of work and one that seems to lay the ground for excuses (eg couldn't do the homework set in class with resources in class because my mobile data ran out / DC couldn't revise for their test because we didn't have show my homework this weekend / DC couldn't do the homework they've had over a week to do because the teacher put it onto show my homework in their PPA on Wednesday when it was set in Tuesday's lesson / DC couldn't do the homework because they were at their Gran's on Tuesday night so didn't have access online even though you did a reminder in Tuesday's lesson and they had their books).

Otherwisebaldandunconvincing · 17/11/2019 12:47

No. They say students need to learn responsibility. I'm very glad.

megletthesecond · 17/11/2019 12:47

Yes. Class Charts.
I'm lucky that DS is on the ball with homework so I don't check it every day.
