lyrics to "to make you feel my love" - DV?

Listening to Rebecca singing "To Make You Feel My Love" on the X-Factor, I'm really uncomfortable with the lyrics "I'd go black and blue".

Seriously, why do you need to be black and blue to demonstrate to love to somebody? Okay, maybe if they were being menaced by a speeding bicycle, and you flung your body in front of it to protect them, but other than that, how might it happen?

Anyone else find it uncomfortably close to the rationale of an abused woman - "He only does it because he's insecure. I'll make him secure and he will stop!"

I accept I may be overthinking it.

I don't see it the way you are. Its more of a "I'd go to the ends of the earth for you" sentiment rather than "whack me if you like"

NicknameTaken · 08/11/2010 16:49

Okay, but why would you be be black and blue from going to the ends of the earth? (Although I can see that "blue" rhymes better than "blisters").

You're over thinking it Grin

BooBooGlass · 08/11/2010 16:52

You're reading way too much into it.

wholelotofarse · 08/11/2010 16:54

WTF?? It's a 'I'll do what it takes' sentiment not 'Wallop me big boy I love you'

NicknameTaken · 08/11/2010 16:54

Okay then - will bow to public opinion. Serves me right for trying to think too much during X Factor.

While you are at it though, I always roung Roy Orbisons I drove all night rather sinister Grin
I drove all night and crept in your room blah blah to make love to you, is that alright? I drove all night. Hmm

InThisSequinBraYesYouOlaJordan · 08/11/2010 16:59

It's originally by Bob Dylan, so it's a man's song, if that helps you at all. Not that men can't be victims of DV, of course.

I'm only really telling you that because it's my fascinating fact I discovered this week, I thought Adele had written it and was really impressed with her.

CheerfulV · 08/11/2010 16:59

I think of it as being black and blue from crawling down the avenue - or whatever else she is wittering on about in the accompanying lyrics. I love the Adele version, it's such a great song Grin
At the worst, I'd say that the person writing the song has an unhealthy willingness to put herself through hell for her other half. Reminds me a bit of the Tracy Chapman song For My Lover, which includes the cheery ditty:

"Two weeks in a Virginia jail
For my lover, for my lover
Twenty thousand dollar bail
For my lover, for my lover

And everybody thinks
That I'm the fool
But they don't get
Any love from you

The things we won't do for love
I'd climb a mountain if I had to
Risk my life so I could have you
You, you, you...

Everyday I'm psychoanalyzed
For my lover, for my lover
They dope me up and I tell them lies
For my lover, for my lover"

So you see, these sort of songs are just about unhealthy dependence and lack of boundaries, rather than domestic violence Wink

If he did drive all night he would not be up for a shag surely, unless said lucky lady had a jug of redbull at the ready?HmmGrin

SparklingExplosionGoldBrass · 08/11/2010 17:00

Well you could see evidence of a sinister X Factor campaign to make DV acceptable if you consider that and Leona Yowlypants Lewis' Bleeding Love (bloody awful, more like) I suppose...

RitaLynn · 08/11/2010 17:02

On a similar theme, watched Back to the Future on Sunday, and a few thoughts came up.

Biff is basically a rapist, but at the end of the film, he's still a friend of the family, and a "character". George wins the love of his wife by beating Biff up, and I'm not surewhat message that sends out

NicknameTaken · 08/11/2010 17:02

Ha, Coca. It would be a bit of a shock to wake up and find Roy (or Celine Dion) on top of you.

SequinBra, I did not know that. That does give a different perspective.

"I drove all night to... collapse and snore in front of you. Is that alright?" Grin

cindystill · 08/11/2010 17:03

I heard a song on the radio yesterday and she sung -'treat me rough' and 'I've had enough of someone being gentle!' I don't think you're the only one that does that Nickname Taken. {tries to eliminate negative experiences from brain Confused}

NicknameTaken · 08/11/2010 17:04

SGB, I would believe any sinister X Factor campaign you care to mention.

Wholelot, trying to scrub image from my brain.

"I drove all night to.....collapse and snore but wake me up in the morning and brace yourself cos your getting it baby cakes. Is thaaaaaaaat aaaaaaaaaaallllllllllrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?" Grin

SparklingExplosionGoldBrass · 08/11/2010 19:36

Actually anyone with five minutes on their hands could easily find themselves a whole selection of songs about DV/killing people for breaching monogamy/rape etc. A lot of 'romantic' stuff is about violence, stalking, that kind of thing if you look at it closely (and especially when it's done by ugly people as opposed to gorgeous ones)

Coca · 08/11/2010 19:40

Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay, I'll be watching you
Oh can't you see you belong to me?
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake, I'll be watching you

Oh no I clearly have too much time on my hands Wink

ninah · 08/11/2010 19:40

Kiss with a Fist, anyone?

JamieLeeCurtis · 08/11/2010 19:41

I agree that when you listen to lots of songs sung by women they are to do with putting up with shit as a testament to how much they love their man.

Coca · 08/11/2010 19:44

Lisa Stansfield's All Woman....if that was a Mumsnet thread....?
SOD THE FUCKER!

4andnotout · 08/11/2010 19:46

Most disturbing song for me is
"Young girl get outta my
Mind,
My love for you is way outta line,
Better run girl,
Your much too young girl"

irishma · 08/11/2010 22:58
