obviously i would like to take it off but i am worried about what it will reveal. I have bought paint, 3 rolls of charity shop bargain,laura ashley wallpaper for feature wall and a new carpet for my dining room. I cant afford to spend much more money,.so shall i paint over the 3 walls that have anaglypta on or risk stripping it off? all advice and past experiences welcome.

What sort of pattern does it have?

I have just spent a fortune getting my hall walls plastered after stripping off old wallpaper and I think it looks too plain.

An anaglypta in a 'nice' pattern might have been better.

it is quite plain just slightly squiggly lines, perhaps it looks awful because a horrible yellow colour , may look better more neutral. I cant afford to get walls plastered. i am just jealous cos bil and sil have had whole house plastered and painted professionaly and my house looks v. tatty and tired, (bit like me actually)

I would be worried that the anaglypta was covering some horrendous damage to the plasterwork underneath... When we moved in, most of our house was wallpapered, but I prefer plain paint. As we stripped the paper, we found the scarring on the plasterwork from where someone had struggled to remove previous wallpaper. We now have rather "rustic textured" walls...

There is absolutely no way you are going to be able to paint straight onto a wall that has anaglypta wall paper on it.

If you are lucky then it may be doable with lining paper, but IME lining paper does not cover all.

I would just paint it for now if it was me.

I say, if you are on a budget, paint over it. A nice modern, fresh colour will work wonders. We had to do this when we moved into our house, we couldn't afford to have it all stripped off. While it wouldn't have been my first choice, it has definitely done the job for now.

paint over in white! it will look nice. This sort of thing was making a comeback apparently (i think i read that somewhere).... but seriously I think it could look nice painted white. as fatjac asked, What kind of pattern?

Far better the anaglypta walls than the early 80's swirly ceilings, btw!!

Paint it unless you can afford to have the walls reskimmed. It will almost certainly take chunks of plaster off with it.

I nearly bought plain anaglypta when I was looking to re - wallpaper recently. I was going to paint it a funky colour a a 'textured wall'

Paint over it until you can afford to have it skimmed.

yes think i will paint over it then.will be a couple ofyears before can afford plastering etc.it is quite plain anaglypta. we also have swirly ceilings upstairs. the 80's have a lot to answer for.
