I'm fairly sure someone on here once linked to some free software or an app to allow you to play around with different ideas and layouts for renovations. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
I guess I want something like the Ikea kitchen planner but for the whole house. And a bit less crap.

You could try sketchup? It's really easy to use & has good tutorials. You can get a free version which will be more than sufficient.

Another vote here for sketchup however type " free house extension design software " into google and you will find quite a few offers.
Architects have to study and train for 7 years to even begin our careers so a few hours with some free software and a screen print will not provide you with a design but merely a picture of what you would like to achieve.
Thanks both. And we will definitely be using an architect! FIL is a retired architect so he would never forgive us if we botched this up!
We are still at least a year away from doing it, so the software is more just to play with various ideas before we throw it over to an architect. Also a bit of a reality check for the brief, when I force myself to come to the conclusion that no, the available space will not accommodate the massive kitchen diner, playroom, formal dining, utility room, study, and library of my fantasies.
