My Year 1 son LOVES reading and has asked for books for Christmas so I thought it might be nice to get him a boxed set, rather than just a few books.

He quite likes Early Reader Horrid Henry, to read himself, and he has an old and battered box set of Mr Men books that he loves us to read to him - and he's starting to read them himself, too.

Has anyone got any good suggestions?

The Book People always have good offers on book sets. Have a look and see what they've got.

My 6yo DS enjoys:
Astrosaurs (prefers these to be read to him, but he does read them himself too)
Dinosaur Cover series
Sophie Smiley (football related books)
Hooey Higgins series (by Steve Voake) - very funny

Have got my Y 1 DS (5) Secret Seven and S.W.I.T.C.H. from the Book People. He likes me to read Beast Quest and Dinosaur Cove to him and he likes to read Horrid Henry and comics to himself.

Claude books are lovely for a beginning independent reader, v funny and lovely pictures but in the format of something a little more grown up so they look like a paperback. DD (also 6) reads and rereads them constantly.

Would highly recommend Lulu and the Brontosaurus which I have got for DD for Christmas and already read myself. And Sally Gardner is great fun - a bit harder but not madly difficult. Things like The Invisible Boy might appeal.

My DD1 loves books. From reception she has had Roald Dahl boxset, Secret Seven. Also reads Dr Seuss and any books by Jeremy Strong & Jacqueline Wilson. Have just brought her for Xmas Michael Morpugeo boxset & Harry Potter.

Don't know how well he reads but mine is 7 and really likes the Jeremy Strong books, Roald Dahl, Horrible Histories.

Mr gum is hilarious, redhouse and the book people have some fab deals on.

Dirty Bertie, silly stories...bleeping beauty, silly willy billy goats etc, some of Usborne early reading? HH....lots of those! Jeremy Strong pirate school are easier and for younger readers.

Would second the seriously silly stories, they are fab. DS (7) still loves to re read them. He loves Little Red Riding Wolf and Snow White and the 7 Aliens the best....

I would also have a look at the Happy Families books too....

DS liked Mr Creep the Crook the best....

I started reading How to train your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell with my DS at 6 yrs he just loves them and now at 8 rereads them regularly. They are so much more entertaining than the film.
Beast quest are also popular with most boys.
I also bought the Babar stories for him another hit. They were a favourite of mine.

I didn't realise there were so many tbh...

I found a book with them all in together in a charity shop (previously I had only thought there were 3 of them..)

Would he be too little for a subscription to The Puffin book club? You get a magazine and choose a book from each (bimonthly I think).

My dd has this subscription magazine they also do a story box one as well.

Try Red House too - I think they are a sister company of Book People but specialise in books for children. Book People have a beautiful set of nature stories with an audio CD for £10. Fab illustrations and simple text.

Also, not a box set but my 6 yr old loves all the Usborne "Look inside" books. they sometimes have them at Book people.
