Still sick at 30+3, can they do anything?

I had terrible sickness and nausea (constantly vomiting or on the verge of it, all day every day) from weeks 6-14 of my pregnancy. I'm a teacher and it was impossible to do my job so I had to be signed off.

Now I'm 30 weeks and the sickness has been back for nearly a month. I've got a repeat prescription for ondansetron (zofran) 4mg which I take 2x a day when things are really bad but they're just not cutting it anymore.

So I'm signed off again, pretty-much housebound and getting more and more depressed by the situation every day. I've tried EVERYTHING from lying on my left to prevent stomach acid to eating crackers every 30 mins to keep myself 'topped up'. Ginger is useless, always has been for me. All I want is cold orange squash.

Things are getting bad, is it worth going back to the GP? Can they do anything more for me? (Up my dose, add in an antacid, I dunno...) I don't know what kind of state I'll be in if this carries on, and it's showing no sign of letting up. Please tell me your stories, if you have any.

Omeprazole (for indigestion) has transformed my nausea and vomiting, even though my indigestion wasn't that bad (it perhaps worse than I realised).

Do go back and see your GP and I hope it gets better soon. (It will get better in 10 weeks but you do have my sympathy. That said, I've not learnt - 26 weeks gone with DC4!)

I'll mention omeprazole. I had it for indigestion a few years ago and it worked really well. Thanks!

I feel for you. I'm a teacher too and I was also signed off sick. I am 35 weeks and have suffered sickness for around 25 weeks out of 35. Today is another bad day in terms of nausea. I wish I could offer you advice but nothing I do seems to help. I eat cheese and fizzy drinks when at my worst. I also use a sailor's band. It has a battery and emits a tiny pulse running down the hand. It was a life saver when on a boat for sickness and does give me some relief - albeit tiny. Medication only took the very edge off my sickness when it was 24/7 and I was clinging onto furniture screaming go away to the sickness.

I really feel for you. I know how truly awful it is. I can't wait to give birth and in my mind 'push the sickness out' lol. X

Ps someone said to me - it must be easy as a teacher with morning sickness. You get to hide in your classroom with the kids.

WHAT PLANET do some people live on.

Lalalax3 · 26/06/2014 21:04

Thanks Layla that's sad for you but reassuring for me! It's impossible to teach when you're sick isn't it?! I can barely concentrate on a book.

I am SO looking forward to giving birth, just for the nausea to end, have barely had a chance to think about my little boy arriving!

Hi, check out the Hypermesis support thread. Everyone there is very friendly and the advice is very good!

In the short term, yes go back to your GP. Indigestion meds can help, anti-sickness meds can also be combined and this helps some people.

It's grim, so here's some Flowers from me!

Layla001 · 26/06/2014 21:29

Yes that's the thing - when you are so ill all you can focus on is being well. I too feel like I can hardly believe I have a new life inside me because trying to stop feeling sick is all consuming. Plus I have almost lived at A&E or GP or consultants. I have morning sickness, heart palpitations which cause sudden fainting, piles, yeast infections, pelvic pain, skin tags and more. The thought of a baby actually comes way down my list. When people ask me if I am excited I feel very removed from everything. Since I am usually focusing on trying to lower my heart rate (had numerous EcGs and a heart monitor) or not chuck up on them. Virtually impossible to think of anything but relief.

Ladies you're wonderful, and Layla you are most definitely not alone in feeling that way! Stay in touch. I'll update tomorrow after the docs.

Keep going back to the dr I haven't stopped being sick all pregnancy (38 weeks) but got worse at 28/29 and swapped medication 3 times in a week...feeling slightly more human now! Also a teacher and understand the pressure Sad

Went back to the GP is morning and our new tactic is meticlopramide 3x a day and 150mg ranitidine 2x a day. We shall see...

mrs gembles metaclopromide has helped me but only when taken alongside cyclizine 3 times a day. If you don't start to get better then definitely go back and ask them to add in the cyclizine too.
