Starving but no appetite!

Hi all,

I know I'm lucky that it isn't severe morning sickness, at least not yet anyway!

I'm about 6 weeks and I literally don't fancy anything even when I'm so hungry I've got hunger pangs. Everything I think of makes me think yuck! I'm forcing myself to eat but then feel yuck after eating.

Any tips on what foods would go down easy and not make me feel like this?

Thanks x

i feel your pain!! ive been unlucky with severe sickness from 6 weeks to now.
i feel starving but the thought of most food makes me want to barf!? i love my food and can put a fair bit away due to my training but since ive found out im pregnant its like someone has flicked a switch!
ive literally been living on toast and jam or dairylea or crackers and fruit and iced water. lost around 10lbs since i found out due to sickness. the odd night when im feeling less shite il make a dinner, eg cottage pie or chicken casserole and mash and enjoy it but its only the odd night.
and nothing tastes the same cos of this bitter taste i seem to now permanently have. so far not liking being 'with child'.

SeriousStuff · 15/02/2013 10:37

I'm exactly the same. In the main I have buttered toast with bursts of craving hot food. I'm starving at the moment and my husband suggested muesli. The mere thought of it made my whole face scrunch up!

I'm allowing myself a treat today and having an Indian tonight, but to be honest, I would happily take it or leave it at the moment.

Maybe try blander things but with a hint of taste (e.g. salt) like toast, cheese on toast, some mash, eggs...

wispa31 · 15/02/2013 10:44

strangely enough, 3-4 weeks back when i was feeling really bad all i wanted was a mcdonalds!?! there were couple of times when i gave in to it and had the chicken legend meal, omfg it was good and those 2 times i had one were only times ive eaten something and felt better the rest of the day! obvs im not recommending you go out for a mccyd's lol.

DanniiH · 15/02/2013 11:06

Ha ha! I did something similar the other day, hadn't had breakfast and went past a KFC so stopped and got a chick burger, it was so yummy but felt crap after it! I just had my 1st food of the day because I just sat here for about 2 hours thinking what do I want, ended up having malt loaf, went down well actually so I'll have to stock up! Like crunch corner yogurts when I'm pregnant but don 't keep me full for long.

It's ridiculous! With my son I had the biggest appetite ever and had such a sweet tooth! Maybe I'll lose the extra weight from that pregnancy in the beginning of this one with any luck! (It's been 3 years!)

I've even gone off wine, a first for me! I was struggling to resist in the 1st few weeks but now it doesn't even cross my mind! x

oooh id love a yogurt now! unfortunately i cant stomach it, and its not nice after you have vomited yogurt :(
malt loaf, hmmm... could work. need to go to shop now anyway. this is another thing, i cant do a shop like i normally would cos its pot luck how i feel when i get up, no point in buying in fresh meat/other stuff incase i dont use it up. last week i made a big pot of brocc and veg soup thinking it was good way to get veg intake up as eating hardly any just now. i had 2 bowls of it and the rest went in the bin. didnt want it. should have boxed it up and put in freezer. i hate wasting food like that.

DanniiH · 15/02/2013 12:30

Was going to say you should just freeze things. I have a local mobile butcher come every Friday so I buy for the whole week and just freeze it. I still have to cook as my other half never cooks! Otherwise if it was just me I'd prob just have a sandwich if I felt like it that is! x

my freezer is tiny so not alot of room to freeze much, even with me being on my own, which wont be for much longer anyway. dp and i very health consious due to his job and my hobby so it wont be left to me to do all the cooking thankfully lol.
he cant believe how much my appetite has been affected and i know he worries about me cos of the sickness. they really do have it easy lol.
settled for toast and dairylea and cup of tea for now. got some eggs for later as i need more protein.

glossyflower · 15/02/2013 12:55

Try drinking a pint of water. Sometimes your body feels hungry when dehydrated but if nausea is a real problem speak to your GP or midwife. Medication may help

DanniiH · 15/02/2013 14:44

Thanks glossyflower, I haven't really got nausea as such, also I'm drinking plenty of fluids, about all I do fancy! I'm ok once I'm eating it's just the thought of things putting me off. Silly hormones! x

forgot to add, i keep a box of ice lollies in freezer and bag of ice cubes. really cold drinks help and ice lollies for the bitter taste, and esp good for when im feeling to ill to drink much.

HaveIThoughtThisThrough · 15/02/2013 15:17

I'm similar. I'm not nauseas and I wouldn't even call it a food aversion but I just have no interest in food. I wander round the supermarket at lunchtime just thinking 'no, don't fancy that' to everything. I still get hungry but just don't want any food. The only thing I think I'm happy eating are potatoes. My DH makes fat free chips and I'll sometimes have a plate of them (with gravy as i'm Northern). I've lost 3lbs so far (7 weeks + 3).

bingeddybongo · 15/02/2013 17:02

I'm in exactly the same boat at 7+6 and it's been killing me for the last 3 weeks because I usually think of almost nothing else except food morning, noon and night. I've really struggled with not being able to think of anything I can bear to eat, especially since what I am finally able to eat one day suddenly becomes the most revolting thing I've ever thought of the next. I'm only interested in hot food though (as in heated up, not spicy) and am currently doing well on toast with butter and honey in the mornings and otherwise basically just tinned tomatoes, which are all of a sudden the most glorious things on the planet, so I had them with some basmati rice for lunch for the last three days. I've even been off chocolate, which is a bit of a shock... although I did have a Magnum on my way home from work just now. In the snow.

wispa31 · 15/02/2013 20:00

managed inhaled a bar of green and blacks white choc earlier. dp had bought me a few bars of green and blacks for valentines, didnt want me eating normal chocs after reading the ingredients in them, bless him. thats first ive actually wanted any choc so far.
trying to decide what i feel like eating for dinner. starving again but feeling sick, could quite easily not eat anything but i have to eat something.

DanniiH · 16/02/2013 09:57

I made a pasta bake last night and had no trouble eating it, seems like once I start eating I'm fine it's just that I don't fancy anything. I'm like you bongo I love my food and am always thinking what to eat next and the thoughts are still there but everything I think of I just turn my nose up at! Wish I would lose just a few lb's but haven't yet! Still got about a stone left over from last pregnancy so defo got it to lose! x

wispa31 · 16/02/2013 10:46

sitting thinking what to have today. really would like a big bowl of frosties or crunchy nut cornflakes. or even just cornflakes with ice cold milk and a banana chopped up. hmmm, decisions decisions..

DanniiH · 16/02/2013 10:54

At least you fancy something and it's time of day appropriate! x

Ordered a curry last night and I couldn't touch it! Just ate poppadoms! I'm not a curry fan to begin with but thought I'd give it a go. x

OP posts:
wispa31 · 17/02/2013 10:59

i like a curry myself, or a tikka masala but so far not wanted anything like that. maybe will once sickness settles. came home from friends house last night with heartburn and feeling it again today. have a feeling thats start of it for me :(

TheFalconsmistress · 17/02/2013 12:41

I seem to be only able for fruit and bland food, toast, potatos even then I am still sick and blocked up too feel pretty rotten tbhSad

Zorra · 17/02/2013 13:09

Ugh I have this as well, 26 weeks of nausea/heartburn/general there's-nothing-I-want-and-can't-choke-it-down-ness Sad I am exactly the same weight as my booking in appointment at 5 weeks, and my midwife was worried. But everything is grim. Bah! I have also found I can force myself at least twice a day, so I have a milkshake with fruit, yogurt and oats in the morning, then at least a homemade soup with bread. It's enough to keep me going, but I wish there was something I really wanted (other than to lick stock cubes but that's a whole other conversation!) apart from ice-cold soda water.

DanniiH · 17/02/2013 18:14

Well today I ran to the loo thinking I was going to throw up, nearly did but then it just diminished! I'm just getting more sicky every day! Haven't even bothered to make a roast chick dinner today and that's literally my favourite meal of all time! Having a warm salad instead! Thinking healthy light food might go down easier and less likely to get over full like I think I did at lunch causing almost sickness. Can't help that i'm constipated too (tmi sorry but it's true)! Hormones have a bloody lot to answer for! x

OP posts:
DanniiH · 17/02/2013 18:16

Ps zorra I've always like stock cubes anyway so that doesn't sound weird! Used to eat knorr chicken ones and also used to dissolve a beef oxo cube in boiling water and eat like soup with bread in it all soggy! x

DanniiH · 18/02/2013 08:05
