hiya, am really struggling to find a nice warm winter coat as its a bit chilly now and my last years coat already doesnt button in the middle. eek and am only 13 weeks. bit worrying actually. anyway i've looked onlne and in shops and theres just nothing nice. would prefer not black, maybe navy or cream and maybe like a duffle coat or smart coat type but not a parka. can anyone help? (will also post in style and beauty but wanted to ask here too)

i've been wondering about this and am not convinced it's worth buying a maternity coat as such. am wondering about just getting a larger size of a normal coat - cheaper and far more options? i'm normally a size 10 and wondering if, say, a size 14 will cover me until my due date in mid jan. will watch this thread with interest in case anyone has any other recommendations. at the moment i'm just wearing my favourite trench coat but i can't do it up.

Agree with sotough.

I went to Matalan and got one of their coats in size 18 (am normally a size 10). It's a lovely green colour with buttons up to the waist and then flares out - perfect for pregnancy. I'm 30 weeks at the moment, and when the baby's here I plan to carry her in a sling against my chest, so the coat will in theory just button over the baby and keep it warm too.

The best part is that the coat cost me £25 and I will just give it away once I'm done with it come spring.

Top shop had a navy blue smartish duffle coat in the other day.

I don't want really want navy and I can't find anything I like.

The problem with just buying a bigger size is that it often won't fit on the shoulders. I bought a couple of bigger tops at the start of my pregnancy and they look awful as they completely sag around the chest. The advantage of buying maternity clothes is that they're properly shaped and so look better.

That said I may have to give in an do what you did Lutyens, cos the only coat I've seen so far is a horrible piece of rubbish in Mothercare that is so thin it wouldn't keep you warm in the middle of summer.

agree with writer the shape of a pregnant body is very different to the shape of a larger lady, ahem.

isabelle oliver ( i think that's her name) does some lovely maternity coats but very expensive! in teh end i just got a mamas and papas very thick cardy and put that on under my non-materntiy coat. the coat didn't button up but the cardy gave me the extra warmth i needed round the belly Smile

I'm looking at a lovely grey coat on the seraphine website. I've promised myself a 'proper' coat as I did the whole just buy a bigger size last time round and it just wasn't very flattering. I was just me with a bump so size 14/16 clothes just didn't look right.

I bought one on Ebay for £20 plus £5 postage, its a nice grey duffle but they seemed to have loads on there and I figure I can always stick it back on e-bay next year! I am glad I got it as I also can't close my ordinary coat (15 weeks)and it's horrible out today!!

I got a great one from Next, I ordered it a couple of months ago and had to wait quite a while for it to come into stock, but now it's here I love it. It wasn't particularly cheap but I plan to sell it on eBay afterwards to recoup a bit of the cost. They had a few nice ones, IIRC.

H&M have cheap winter coats. OrOr Sainsburys have some nice capes in which are perfect for pregnant tummies xx

I think they have some in New Look maternity section. I'm not sure whether they're more like jackets though, rather than a warm winter coat.

Grr, it's so annoying! I thought that my coat would see me through until my due date in feb but it already feels tight at 19 weeks and I can't afford a new coat that will just last me one winter!

Red Herring at Debenhams or New Look maternity and also H&M maternity have all definitely done them in the past.

I had a really good swing duffle coat in Primark in cordoroy for £17. It skims the bump nicely!

This year, thank God, capes are in, swing coats are in and trapeze coats are in ( the ones shaped like triangles, like this ^). What with it being a summer of maxi dresses and waterfall cardigans still doing the rounds, along with smock top/loose dresses over leggings/jeggings, 2010 has been a good year to be up the duff in.

I got a gorgeous JoJo Maman coat on ebay for twenty quid +P&P, also a really warm US cardie-coat, so I recommend having a look on ebay for a tailored pregnancy coat in your size, or else going the high St fashion look with a cape/swing coat in a size up, so it still fits the shoulders but accommodates your bump and bigger bust. I agree that lashing out full price for a mat coat you'll only wear for a few months is a bit mad, and that the choice isn't great anyway.

As an aside, why does every retailer think pregnant women just want to wear black, grey, navy and purple during the winter? when you are likely to feel drained and sallow as it is? Matching a whole wardrobe of slightly different shades of black is a nightmare, it looks really scruffy. I would love to see more reds, clear bright blues, warm pinks, khakis, camels, chocolate stuff. Yes, I can use scarves and jewellery and stuff but it's still a bit tiresome.

writer I wouldn't dream of buying tops in larger sizes for pregnancy - as you so rightly point out, the shape of a pregnant woman is different from a larger-sized woman. Coats are different however, as they only have to perform 2 functions - cover your entire torso and be thick enough to keep you warm! I don't see the point of shelling out well over 50 quid for a coat that is not suitable for winter (I have not found a single maternity jacket that is warm and provides ample coverage) and will not be worn again next year.

Maternity jacket designers seem to think that we pregnant woman waft about in centrally-heated plush spaces. I'd like them to do the school run in pouring rain just once, then we'll start to see some sensible maternity jackets in the stores Angry

I got a tartan duffle coat last winter in Tesco. I'd bought it a size too big for wearing to rugby where it's freezing and you need to wear a fleece under it, and it still fits fine at 37 weeks(and i'm BIG). Might be worth having a look in Tesco as it was only £25 or thereabouts.

Matalan have maternity coats between £20 and £35. I was admiring a lovely green one when I was in!

I bought a swing coat from Tesco, lovely teal colour, £25. It's actually in the size I would usually wear and I'm 32 weeks and HUGE! Also, H&M are doing ponchos in the non-maternity section, have one of those too which is perfect for more coverage. I'm due end of November so didn't want to spend money on a maternity coat, also my own coats are fitted so unlikely to be fitting into them soon after baby arrives! Happy shopping!

Black or grey coats (I think swing - not sure about the terminology!) in New Look, £40 - not somewhere I normally shop but these were pretty good, and did seem like 'proper' coats and pretty warm. I got the black one today. I tried the TopShop navy ones too but these were actually slightly smarter, and better colours for me - though possibly won't be very hard wearing (I suspect the buttons may fall off at some stage!). But I only have to get to January...
