Getting dry at night

my DD is 3.5 and has been out of nappies during the day for a year. Have kept pull ups on at night as she always wakes with a wet nappy. Stayed over at a friends whose 4 yr old doesn't wear nappy at night and she started asking not to wear nappy at night. Another friend said just take nappy off and get on with it.
So.......
I stopped giving drinks past 530 pm and put a potty in her rm. Put mattress protecters on etc...
First night woke at 3, small accident only required pj bottoms changed
Last night 2 small accidents, 1 am and 4 am.
She is showing no inclination to use potty! Or go to toilet which is directly next door.
Should I just continue as I am or has anyone got any top tips please?

I know some people don't agree with it,but have you tried lifting dd at 11ish? Worked with our ds1 and he goes through the night no problem now. With ds2 we didn't need to lift at all. They are all different.

Also, watch what she drinks at 5.30-avoid asprtame and pure Orange juice. (either separate or combined) Aggravates the bladder. We give water at that time with evening meal and juice earlier in the day.

Mine never had a potty in their room, if they needed the toilet they got up and went to the bathroom. although ds1 has been known to try and wee in his wardrobe in the middle of the night! hmm

I am v cincerned abount my Ds - he is 5 next week and is still not dry at nite and has t wear nite pants. He sleeps so deeply he simply doesn't wake up if he needs a wee. I too limit drinks and make sure he goes to the loo. WIll he grow out of it eventually . No idea or does he have medical problem?

My ds is growing out of it gradually. He's 3.9. And is dry 9 times out of 10. I just left him to his own devices really. Pull up on every night and just gradually over the last year or so I've noticed them getting drier and drier. I still use them just in case though but I doubt for much longer. I dint know what age it becomes an issue but I do know mums with 4 year olds nowhere near dry at night yet so I wouldn't be concerned. I was just told, like everything, they do it when they are ready.

violaything does your Ds have accidents during the day? if so it could be a medical condition. my ds1 was diagnosed with irritable/overactive bladder last summer. he now takes oxybutinin twice a day and is much better. however I also have a friend who's Ds is 5.10 and us still in pullups at night as he is always wet.

Thanks.
Last night she asked for pull ups so I put them back on.
She came through at 430 and I took her to toilet and we left them off.
Small accident when she got up at 6.

Am thinking I have started too soon and will wait till we get a few dry nappies before I try again.

It is a physiological thing to wake up before you need the toilet and can't be learned or taught. 3.5 is still very young. Up to 8 is considered normal.

I have just posted on another thread, DS in pull ups at night nearly 6. He is just not ready. Doc said normal to be wet at 5, not to worry come to doctor to discuss (for night wetting) until 7.

Also has irritable bladder and takes oxybutinin twice a day which helps with daytime wetting.

Thanks Stripy, for pointing that out. It is hormonal and is not a learned skill. My DS is 5 and still in pull-ups at night and neither of us are remotely concerned. I am sure that he will be dry by eight and if not I will deal with it appropriately then.

My DD is nearly seven and is still wet at night. We have just had another try to get rid of the pull ups but it didnt work. I might take her to the GP once she is seven but people keep telling me it's quite common.

Cartoonjane, what pull-ups do you use- the dry nights? My DS is only tiny so still fits in no5 pull-ups, but the specialist ones are so bloody expensive.

The body produces a hormone that slows down urine production at night, it starts at different ages for different children and there is nothing you can do about it to "train" them to go through the night. I would just wait until she has dry nappies in the morning consistently. The reason that lifting them is not advised (although some people I know swear by it) is because this will then affect the bodies time to produce this hormone till after the last wee and they will be in the habit of going at that time so then it might be difficult to get them to stop that one.

Phew! All hugely helpful thanks.
Think have been guilty of competitive mummying and listened to a friend who has trained

SMCM Mon 06-Feb-12 20:39:53

Sorry! Her 2.5 year old.
Need to realise 3.5 is still young and relax!

It would be like trying to get you child's hair to grow quicker... smile

My littlest was dry at night 3 months before she was dry in the day. Tried putting her in pants during the day but she just kept wetting herself I was getting frustrated because she just didn't seem to grasp when she needed a wee but confused that she could go all night, health visitor explained to me it wasn't that she was controlling it just didn't have the wee there.

Couple of friends of mine have 5 year olds still in pull ups at night don't worry it will come.

My DS has no probelms during the day and is fully trained to use the loo. it just seems to be at night time.

My youngest DD is going to be 7 in Sept and she is still wearing pull ups at night I can count on one hand the amount of times she has been dry! My oldest daughter (who is 10 now) was dry just b4 she was 6 years old, while her younger sister (now 8 years old) was dry just b4 she was 3! So my youngest who is still in pull ups has been the longest one in nappies - i have been buying them for the last 10 years and have not had a break yet!!! I hope she will be dry b4 she turns 7 if she is not I will got to the GP and see if they can recommend something - at the moment I dont want to make an issue about it with her. I have tried all the usual waking at night, stop drink b4 bed, she only drinks water and milk but has fresh OJ in the morning.
