wonder if anyone had any advice for me. we have 2 dogs, one is great but the younger one (16 mths) has never got out of the habit of messing in the house. we did all the recommended training but hes just never seemed to have got the hang of it! he only ever does it in our kitchen,he is quite capable of holding on until the morning because he does not mess if we are visiting my parents. he obviously thinks its allowed at home. ive tried cleaning with biological washing powder because ive read that this gets rid of the smell but it hasnt worked. any other ideas ? is there anything special i could buy to deter him ? . i also lift up the water overnight but this doesnt help either.

Have you thought about going back to crate training?

Apparently you can buy a product from the vet which is more reliable than biological washing poweder....

If he only does it in the kitchen then it appears that he thinks it is OK to do it in there. How long do you leave him in the kitchen without taking him out for a piddle. I always tell new owners to think about how long they can comfortably hold their bladders overnight and then consider the dog is made to hold it usually longer, regardless of how uncomfortable it become.

I think you need to go back to basics and that means being there to catch him when he goes. Then straight outside with him, wait till he goes and praise and treat him when he does the required action . Some dogs catch on quick, others take awhile. But you really need to be there to catch him in the act. For now I would take him out every couple of hours during the night, as you would a puppy and praise and treat when he performs. I know its a bit of a nuisance but persistence should pay off. As coolmama said, I would also try crate training again, if it worked first time around.

Are you able to put him in another room at night? He is maybe viewing the kitchen as an extension to the garden, but understands that the rest of the house is a piddle-free zone.

Also take him to the vet to rule out any urinary problems that may cause him difficult holding his bladder.

Can I also point out that you should never withhold water from your dog, fresh water should always be available. Just make sure that you take him out last thing at night and first thing in the morning to relieve himself.

As for special products to deter him, I would save my money, gentle, consistent training usually works better.

Good Luck, I hope you get it sorted soon.

The product, Joannie, is not meant as a substitute to gentle persistent training, it simply elimates the odour of urine which is still evident to the dog even after washing and disinfecting the area (thus whilst remnants of urine scent remain, the dog is drawn back to the area to urinate again)

My dog did this when he first came to us, and I was using Finish stain removing mousse, but he kept going on the same spot again. I was told by the vet to use non-bio washing product - bio and carpet cleaners have a bleach of sorts in them, and the dog "views" this as another dog's smell, therefore re-scents.

I diluted 1/2 capful Ariel non bio in a bowl of hot water, and scrubbed like mad! It worked, cos he never did it again.

I also checked with the vet to make sure that there weren't any infections present (he started weeing about 3 weeks after we adopted him, so he had already proved that he was house-trained). Luckily there weren't any infections present - I think the first time was sheer desperation, but after was scent marking

It is supposed to be biological washing powder!

It doesn't work any way....

Well, i have now tried washing with non bio & bio and neither of them works for my messy dog !

Vetinary Nurse at my puppy training class confirmed today that it is biological powder, but that in addition, when the area has dried off apply surgical spirit.

I use a mix of white vinegar & warm water t lift the smell. Put it on one of those water spray bottles.

Our puppy used to like going on the hall rug & this worked a treat to lift the stain & the smell.

I should add...

You need to use kitchen towel to mop up all excess urine, cover are well with vinegar & water & soak up until kitchen towel almost dry. Do not use patterned kitchen towel, just plain white.

If kitchen towel coming up yellow reapply vinegar & water until no yellowing.

House triaining, we took puppy out every 20 mins, took him to the same (ish) spot & said 'wee wee' & his name. Big praise when doing what we wanted him to & a little treat immediately after. He soon got the idea & now at 7 months will'knock' on the door to go out druing the evening. He doesn't like the rain either, but if he needs to go, he has to go out in it. The backdoor is always open during the day & he now goes in & out of his own accord.
