It has been so long since I bought him, he is 10 that I have totally forgotten how to go about getting a puppy, ie not going via a puppy farm. I will confess that I was clueless before but got very lucky. He was purchased from a family home and I saw both parents and it all went smoothly.
I have been looking this evening and loads of the ads say "phone calls only, no emails as changing provider or do not check emails daily". This is a bit
to me.
Preferably I would like the same breed as I have now, as he and his requirements fit so perfectly with us as a family and vice versa I hope, just don't want to go about it the right way this time and I'm not sure I did last time.

Would you consider breed specific Rescue at all, for a slightly older dog or puppy?
I agree that the ads are dodgy and I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a dog that way, as they could be puppy farms masquerading as private owners or just clueless hobby breeders.
If you're set on a puppy from a breeder then check out the breed websites/forums and get a feel for who is genuine. There's a checklist somewhere about what to look for i.e does the breeder ask you as many questions as you ask them, will they take the dog back at any point in its life if your circumstances should change etc (not saying they will change btw, it's just a sign of a reputable breeder).
