It's ill, not I'll, when you're talking about health ...

... I can't believe the number of threads I've seen recently where a poster has referred to someone being I'll when they're unwell. (Yes, I accept that some of them are probably attributable to DYOC - but not all of them.)

And.Breathe. grin

You obviously don't have an iPad

ShatnersBassoon Tue 07-Feb-12 18:05:47

It won't be intentional. Autocorrect every time.

Pagwaatch Tue 07-Feb-12 18:05:52

iPad.

Just iPad.

Not stupid. Just iPad and not checking.

Iggly Tue 07-Feb-12 18:06:18

My iPhone corrects ill to I'll. Pisses me right off and I suspect that's the source of your ridiculous ire.

cutegorilla Tue 07-Feb-12 18:07:10

My stupid phone always does that.

fuzzPigwickPapers Tue 07-Feb-12 18:11:24

It is all autocorrect. Surely nobody would deliberately add an apostrophe? Maybe the other way round... (ie meaning I'll but writing ill)

I often want to write 'hell' but it sometimes corrects to he'll. Grrrr

OlaRapaceFru Tue 07-Feb-12 18:13:09

No, I don't have an iPad - and I quite happily accepted that most of it was probably down to DYOC. But this is Pedants' Corner, after all; so surely I'm allowed a bit of ridiculous ire? grin

So - can any of you answer why it corrects 'ill' to 'I'll'?
It's not as though ill is such an unusual word.

SauvignonBlanche Tue 07-Feb-12 18:15:22

Just tried it on my iPad and it came up on the autocorrect.

TheDetective Tue 07-Feb-12 18:17:21

The joys of the iPhone! And the reason why it corrects it is because it corrects anything that it thinks may be missing its ', hell becomes he'll, etc!

eaglewings Tue 07-Feb-12 18:17:55

Maybe because the iPad does not recognise illness, as being an Apple it is immune from viruses grin

I'll is ill autocorrected on my iPhone too.

OlaRapaceFru Tue 07-Feb-12 18:21:24

How odd, Sauvignon. Maybe technology doesn't recognise the concept of being ill at all? confused

(I typed the above before I saw your response, eaglewings. But I think you must be correct!)

TheOneWithTheHair Tue 07-Feb-12 18:21:55

I think it gives you the word you use most often as the autocorrect. Most people probably use I'll more than ill.

OnlyWantsOne Tue 07-Feb-12 18:23:48

Well I'll be sure it's because they are typing it I'll but the iphone auto corrects.

OnlyWantsOne Tue 07-Feb-12 18:23:58

grin

plutocrap Tue 07-Feb-12 18:26:44

Isn't it DYAC? confused

My postnatal thread went AC-tastic once the babies were born and people had to post one-handed fingered

mumatron Tue 07-Feb-12 18:26:54

My blackberry does this too. It also changes Mo to month. Now that really pisses me off.

It's DYAC, not DYOC, when you're talking about autocorrect... wink

SleepyFergus Tue 07-Feb-12 18:28:00

Seriously OP? Don't you think it's rather obvious that in most cases it will be down to an autocorrect somewhere???

If you had been complaining about there and their being used incorrectly I'd understand, but I don't honestly think anyone is spelling ill as I'll because they can't spell ill.

Jeez!

perplexedpirate Tue 07-Feb-12 18:28:41

Apparently the loose/lose thing is autocorrect as well, which makes it a bit more bearable.

plutocrap Tue 07-Feb-12 18:30:12

I don't honestly think anyone is spelling ill as I'll because they can't spell ill.

Not like "potato's"

grin

plutocrap Tue 07-Feb-12 18:31:52

Why the hell would AC be needed for either loose or lose? Both are real words!

OlaRapaceFru Tue 07-Feb-12 18:32:18

Thank you, all. It hadn't occurred to me how many people have auto correct.

The next time I see an 'I'll', which should really be 'ill', I'll stop being so ridiculously irate <<snort>>

MinnieBar Tue 07-Feb-12 18:34:48

DYAC
DYOC

For future reference… wink
