Present ideas for a 7 year old's Christening

My step sister is having her 7 year old DD christened soon (not sure why they have left it until now) and we are invited to church and party afterwards. I am looking for ideas for appropriate gifts as traditional christening presents seem more aimed at babies. Also I am not religious so a bible etc. would not be appropriate either. Thanks for any suggestions.

How about a lovely necklace or bracelet that she can make bigger as she gets older? Or instead of a Bible, how about a lovely book of Shakespeare stories (aimed at children) or Greek Myths or something that can last her a long time?

Are these any good?

Yes, a pretty necklace might work and would not be the sort of thing I would buy her for birthday/xmas. Thanks.

A copy of "The Magic of Reality - How We Know What's Really True" by Richard Dawkins. Brilliant book for children, especially ones with parents who are keen to indoctrinate them into religion.

I was christened when I was 8 and it's lovely to be able to remember the day/party.

I was given a silver charm bracelet which I've still got and still add to. I also had a lovely jewellery box.

Books are also good?

A nice bag for the school they're trying to get her into?

Grin Pootles2010 - i hadn't thought of that. Better stick with the necklace and not the Dawkins book tho...

Books or charm bracelet would be good, or maybe if you are less comfortable with the religious aspect then something more neutral but still symbolic, for example candle making kit (light), some fruit bushes (new life) etc.
