Mysterious nappy leaks- wtf?

DS 7mo driving me nuts, he's waking constantly in the early part if the night for reasons I can't fathom.

Then he's managing to wet himself twice at c 1am and 4am, requiring change of clothes, he's then impossible to get back down. The nappy isn't full, or anywhere near it.

We're getting no sleep and I'm at the end of my tether, spending most of the time in tears.

  • the nappy isn't too small. He's only at the bottom of the weight requirement. I've tried the size up anyway and I've tried baby active (pampers) as well as baby dry. No difference. We've been using pampers baby dry for months without any issues

  • we make sure he's pointing down etc I don't think it's too loose or too tight.

Where am I going wrong.

at the risk of sounding silly, are his nappies too large? If they are, although they may not be too loose when you put it on him, when he wriggles about, they could become slightly loose allowing an escape route for the wee. Disposable nappies should be able to soak up all a 7m old can throw at them so to speak.

How frustrating for you though.

But they've been fine for weeks... Same size ... Argh!

I don't go on weight personally, if they start leaking that's my cue to move up to the next size.

we reached a point with pampers that no matter what size they leaked. switched to tescos own and no more leaks and saved about 50%.

I've also used aldi nappies and they're great.

He's probably trying to play with his willy!
DD did this weird leaking, discovered she was chilling out by putting her feet up on the sides of her cot and having a wee. It just came straight out. She was 2.3 though so easier to explain and it stopped.
Gaffer tape Grin around the waistband to see if he is loosening them?

Had a similar issue with DS. Make sure when you change his nappie that his willie is pointing downwards. We discovered that if DS was pointing upwards his nappies would leak since he's wetting nearer the top which is less absorbent. I've also heard that putting on nappies backwards can help with boys. Worth a try Wink.

Def. try a different brand then. Wilko's were good for us at night time.

We check he's not pointing up. And we've tried size up.

Might try another brand, but its just so odd that its been completely fine till now.

His vests are starting to get slightly too short... Wondering if that might be it....

Happened to us too. I think we changed size and it stopped. Then happened again randomly a few months back and stopped just as suddenly n maybe go a size down? Personally I love baby dry and wouldn't change brand. Tried huggies and they leaked through the nappy (not the sides or back or front but through the nappy itself!) and since then we've been too scared to try other brands. Maybe double the nappies? I've heard of people using two nappies at the same time? And we use a cloth nappy wrap when out with dd as she does huge poos that always leak. Maybe incorporate a cloth nappy booster?

If the vests are getting tight that could be causing it. We use cloth but if vests are too tight it can cause 'compression leaks'. You can get vest extenders from amazon which are useful if the next size of vest is too wide.

Any time I've used Pampers they've leaked.

Try Asda or Lidl own brands, they're excellent.

Pampers have recently changed their nappies again which may have had an impact.

I also found when she starts to grow out of her vests her nappies leak - because they are compressed too tight to absorb quickly it runs out the side.

The only other reason I've found for leaking is that the nappy fit isn't right. Babies don't grow uniformly all over - so what fitted perfectly everywhere at one point may suddenly be too narrow/long/wide/short/gapey in areas. DD goes rounder before a growth spurt and then stretches out and goes thinner. Her nappies fit differently depending on what is happening - even though her actual weight remains in the brackets of one size I have to chop and change to get a good fit.

Going up or down a size may help, but if not then a change of brand may be the only way to stop it. Some nappies are wider than others, some have a higher waist etc, and it can be trial and error.

Weight isn't really a good indicator of nappy fit - short round babies may weigh the same as tall but thin babies and their nappy requirements will be completely different.

I had issues with Pampers leaking when DS3 was about 13mo, and I have been using Huggies ever since. They were fine until very recently, DS3 is now just turned 2yo.

As mentioned above, he is weeing THROUGH the nappy. I mean, WTF?!

I don't think it is the vests, as he only wears 'popper' vests for half the week, and normal 'big boy' vests the other half of the week, yet it's still happening.

It's not the size that's the issue - he is slap bang in the middle of the weight for size 5. The waist fits fine. The leg holes fit fine. The next size up, both leg holes AND waist are too large.

I need a brand that can cope with his niagara wees, that has a fairly narrow waist, tiny leg holes, isn't dearer than £10 for 60-ish nappies (I tend to buy the larger packets, boxes cost too much all at once, small packs don't last long enough), doesn't leak through between 11pm and 7am (I NEED them to last for 6 hrs).

Too much to ask?!

I started out using Huggies with DD - but they leaked for her, hence me now using Pampers.

It might be worth trying a Pampers BabyDry again, as they have rejigged everything and added an additional absorbent layer. My DD wees a lot and can still go 12 hours in a BabyDry - ActiveFit leak like a sieve though. I buy them on Subscribe and Save from Amazon or when the supermarkets have offers on and never pay more than £10 for a box of 70.

I have taken to putting a cloth, washable insert into DS's nappy at night after we had a mammoth leaking session. We use Pampers Baby Dry.

I wasn't sure about them, but its been fine. The ones I got are narrow enough to fit in the 'channel' in the disposable nappy. They fold into 3, pop inside, then in the morning I rinse them and machine wash when I've got a load on.

Can't remember where I got them from, but it might have been something like The Nappy Lady?

Saved a fortune in washing vests, pjs, sleeping bag, sheets....!

I had this problem with ds2 - then I read a thread on here (can't find it now though!) where someone suggested putting a cotton wool ball on the end of the willy, making sure its pointing down, then fastening the nappy firmly to hold the cotton wool in place.

No more leaks now - looks like ds wriggling during sleep was causing his little willy to return to its default 'left' position that would just send all wee straight out the left leg hole!
