You've just won £1m on the lottery, now what do you do with it?

Live off it, nothing specific except get the various things done that needed to be done around the house. Other than that nothing really. Sorry to be boring but it would be nice but wouldn't really solve any probs for me. It wouldn't open any doors having that kind of cash I don't think anyway.

Although £1m is a lot of money, these days it probably wouldn't go a long way if you went completely mad. My husband and I have hypothetical arguments about winning so the first thing I'd do is give him his half to do what he likes with as he doesn't agree with helping others in the family financially (miserable git!).

We'd pay off the mortgage, maybe move somewhere slightly bigger. I'd love to go to Lapland too! I'd like to go to Oz for 6 months when the kids are older and have a good look round, Hong Kong and Thailand too. I'd donate some to local charities and I'd love to help provide a decent Youth Club round here. Have I got any left for a Louis Vuitton bag and some handmade shoes for my horrendously wide feet! Oh and a chef!

I would have to share some of it among close relatives and friends so that they do not have such a financial burden, then I would pay of my mortgage and by somewhere that did not need so much work doing to it and was a little bit bigger so that we could have the WHOLE family at christmas without having to sit on each others laps! Then I would go on a little spree, have a great family holiday and hopefully have alittle left for the bank. Who knows "it could be you"!

After mopping the floor up having lost all control of my bladder, I would lock all the doors and windows and sit in the lounge until the man from the lottery came round to check the ticket. Then I would pay for all my closest friends and family to go to a 5* Health Farm to be pampered while we all decided what to do with the money.

I would like to take my lovely family to the local Estate Agents and say 'Pick a house, any house', take them all to China to walk the Great Wall and climb Huashan mountain.

I'd invest a hefty amount for the children for either university or setting up a business or whatever they chose to do (Trust Fund probably).

Then I'D NEVER WEAR COTTON KNICKERS AGAIN!!! ONLY SILK!!!

LOL, Batters!!!! Another thing I would do would be to make an appointment with my Bank Manager and then go in all weepie and say I simply don't know what to do about my finances. I'd let him be all firm and harsh and then drop the cheque on the table and say 'Will that cover everything' and then watch the bugger suck up to me even though I the following week I would transfer everything to a different bank altogether - or keep it under my mattress so that none of the banks would get any of it! God that would give me the greatest satisfaction, just one small moment of one-upmanship over the people that seem to think they can have a say on my life!

Batters, where do you stand on the eating out concept? Cos if I won the lottery, I feel sure that I wouldn't struggle with the 'fish fingers/crispy pancakes' issue every night!

Find a piece of land and build my own house. Not a mansion, just something architect-designed with lots of light and everything just exactly how I wanted it: fancy kitchen, top-of-the range bathrooms, two studies so that my work space would never get cluttered up with dh's stuff, decent playroom for the kids etc.

I would pay our parents mortgages off, give some other relatives some money to make their life a little bit easier then move to Newquay. Somewhere near the beach so dh can go surfing everyday in a house where my ponies can look through the kitchen window. Then I would just chill.
Oh and by the way I believe it is my turn to win tonight, fingers crossed.

We were lucky, Robinw - we built an extension in 1999 and found a really good architect who was on our wavelength. We'd definitely get him to design our house if we came into money, and I know we'd all, him included, thoroughly enjoy not having any budget restrictions on what materials and fixtures and fittings we could use, unlike last time!

Well DH and I have worked this out. £1,000,000 invested could give an income of around £20,000 a year. So what we would do is buy a slighter bigger house (same village, with one extra bedroom and one extra bathroom). Go to Oz to see his family and then invest the rest. This would mena I could give up work, and look after the kids, becasue at the moment I am the breadwinner, he's a struggling actor, and so this amount of money would really change our lives. Not to spend spend spend, but fundamentally change the balance and give us everything we have ever dreamed about.

Slightly off the track for a sec.... Crunchie! My other half's a struggling actor as well - and believe me, he struggles more than he gets paid work. He's doing a mundane driving job right now which all but kills his spirit - it's so sad. And we live in a 1-bed flat with our 2 and a half yr old! What WOULDN'T I do with a million?!?!?

I was discussing this with dh on Saturday - pay off our absolutely humungous and crippling mortgage (which is the price you pay for wanting a house in London), help out immediate family, I think I would stop working too - and it would be nice if dh could as well! We managed £90 this week on the lottery - best we've ever done!

Munchkinsugarpie, I know what you mean. We are incredibly lucky that I have a good well paid job and we are able to have a nice house, company car etc. But that means I HAVE to work. In 5 yrs we have been together I think Tim has done about one paid job a year! However once we had kids we decided it was pointless him doing a c**p job and having to pay childcare, so he looks after the kids when not working. That said he is working at the mo (our local theatre) and he has just 3 weeks off before panto (another theatre just 30 miles away - so he's at home). This means he will have had about 6 months work since April (hey he might have to pay tax for the first time ever!)

Give up work, pay off the mortgage, do absolutely nothing until the kids are old enough to fend for themselves, then leave them to live in our house and travel anywhere and everywhere. They wouldn't have to pay rent but they'd still have to pay the bills, work and learn the value of money. Once they've done that I might let them have some of my winnings - if I've got any left that is!! Oh, and if I'm feeling generous I might pay for hubby to travel with me, second thoughts no I won't. I'll pay for him to have the harem he's always wanted, I'll get lots of peace then!!!

Wishful thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
