Emma Kennedy on being an only child

Some of this is a bit OTT (but then so are all the anti-only-child stereotypes) but I thought generally it was pretty good. I especially like this passage:

"The only negative I can ever come up with when I am quizzed about the downside of being an only child is that, when the time comes, I shall bear the burden of my parents' old age and inevitable decline on my own. While this will be difficult and stressful and heartbreaking, I can think of no greater privilege than being asked to look after the two people to whom I owe everything. My mother taught me to read, my father taught me to ride a bike. Those two things alone have gifted me a world of endless joy. So why wouldn't I want to be eternally grateful?"

It was good to read this but I think I would have preferred a more in depth article. But still, nice to see another success story!

I'm glad she's happy, and I shall try to take comfort.

The run-up to Christmas is when I feel the sadness of only having one most keenly of all. DS seems perfectly happy, most of the time. But then again, so do I. sad

Must remember the mantra - there are much worse things than only having one child.
