I recently saw staff drinking from travel mugs while supervising a toddler room. I was very alarmed but didn't say anything. When I told a friend she said 'sure you could knock over a cup of tea at home.' I'm very careful with hot drinks at home and I don't like this notion of 'that could happen anuwhere' any time DS has been injured at nursery. Is this a normal policy in nurseries? Would be interested to hear from anyone who works in one.

Er no, not usual policy IMO and as a member of management, I would be putting a stop to it NOW.
Are you sure there were hot drinks in the travel mugs, it may have been water or juice or anything. Were the staff sitting on the floor with children drinking or were they up standing out of the childrens reach?
Most nurseries have a policy stopping carers drinking hot drinks around children, i would go in and ask a few questions, find out exactly what is happening and then after finding out the exact situation. You can make a informed descision about what to do next instead of going in ready for a fight.

Travel mugs have lids. If it were knocked over the spillage would be far less than an open mug, probably why they use them.
At our nursery they go upstairs to their little kitchen for a break when they want a hot drink

Not good in my opinion. You may well knock a drink over at home but are far less likely to be distracted
