Just been to look round a nursery which ticked a lot of boxes for my family, but I have one reservation: it's in the basement of a large community building. They do have access to a covered outdoor area, which provides some natural light to the main nursery rooms, though it's quite small, and the whole place just seems very dark. I'm probably being a bit PFB about it aren't I? My concern is that if it seemed dark this bright, sunny afternoon, will it be really quite grim on a rainy, miserable day?
DS won't be there full time so I'm not worried about him being a complete pit pony, but would it concern anyone else?

Yes, I work in a nursery and it wwould drive me nad, not having natural light and not being able to see out of the windows, so you can imagine how it would affect children.
I'm sure it says that settings should have natural light in the EYFS regulations, it's a basic human need.
I wouldn't consider a nursery like that.

I excluded a nursery for the same reason. Natural light is important
I wouldn't want DD to be in a nursery that dark.

There's no way I'd use a nursery like that, not even part time.
Sounds awful. They'll all turn into Gollums.

Yes I turned down a nursery like that. The staff were all miserable: I am sure no-one with any choice wanted to work there. Would you?

Hahaha, don't want a Gollum baby! As I mentioned in my OP there is some natural light! The children were all very happy and active, the staff enthusiastic, Ofster impressed (not that I pay TOO much attention to Ofsted), but I think your reactions just confirm my gut instinct that it was too dark for my bright light-loving DS.
