Hi - my older teen DD is practcising this for acoustic guitar and voice with friends. They asked me about the line "...mind the empty bottle with the holes along the bottom" and what it meant. I haven't a clue - is it an illusion to something only the writer would understand?or drugs? the girls have googled to find an answer but couldn't find one. Do any wise MN'ers have ideas???

it means a bong, a bottle fashioned to become a tool for smoking marijuana

I always thought it was alluding to the phrase "fell through the bottom of the bottle" eg an alcoholic.

But she already refers to alcoholism in the song as something her boyfriend turns to, she gives lots of different examples of the things he might turn to to solve his probs and is basically saying, ''you need to be strong within, not turn to...
-food
-super malt whiskey hidden in the bottom drawer
-putting her (a very young woman at the time of writing this) on a pedestal
-smoking
Good luck to your DD smile
